Bo Bichette is the First Shortstop with 6+ Hits and 3+ Home Runs

September 6, 2022 by Last Word On Baseball

Bo Bichette

Bo Bichette is raking again. But, for a player who’s been looking for consistency all season, he did something no other shortstop in the AL has done before. According to Stats by STATS, he’s the first shortstop in AL history to have six hits and three home runs in a single day.

Bo Bichette Is Heating Up

Things seem to be clicking at the right time for the Toronto Blue Jays. They took Game 1 in their doubleheader sweep of the Baltimore Orioles as Bichette’s bat was red hot. He hit a three-run home off Nick Vespi in the third inning. Then, he added solo shots in the sixth and seventh against Bruce Zimmermann. After their Game 2 victory, the Blue Jays have a firmer grasp for the third and final AL Wild Card spot with a 4 1/2 game over the Orioles.

Bichette has been on fire lately. Entering Monday, he was batting .360/.430/.540 over the last two weeks. He went 12-for-22 (.545) over his last five games. In addition, the 24-year-old has improved his average from .266 to .271 during that span. He joined teammate Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to hit three homes in a game this season. Guerrero Jr. did it on April 13 against the New York Yankees.

They’re now the fourth pair of teammates under 25 with a three-home run game in the same season. Other players include Larry Parrish and Gary Carter with the 1977 Montreal Expos, Tommy Brown and Duke Snider with the 1950 Brooklyn Dodgers, and Lou Gehrig and Tony Lazzeri with the 1927 New York Yankees.

With only 28 games left on the schedule, there is time for Bichette to stay hot. He should help ignite a Blue Jays lineup that can overcome their inconsistent run-prevention with run production.
