The Baltimore Orioles fell to the New York Yankees by a score of 6-3 Monday night. Homeruns were the downfall for the Orioles as five of the six New York runs were a result of the longball. As if back-to-back two-out solo homeruns by Anthony Volpe and Kyle Higashioka in the fifth inning weren’t bad enough, the back breaker was a Harrison Bader three-run bomb in the eighth.
Tyler Wells did his job; he gave the Orioles a chance to win. Wells allowed 2 runs on 5 hits (2 HR), walked 2 and struck out 4 in a 6.0 inning start and exited with a 3-2 lead. The decision to remove Wells after throwing 86 pitches (56 strikes) was questionable at best but in fairness to Manager Brandon Hyde, the two fifth innings homers followed by a sixth inning double and a walk probably factored into the decision.
The first wild pitch thrown of the season by All-Star Yennier Cano (1-1) allowed Volpe to score the tying run, in retrospect, was a harbinger of things to come. Danny Coulombe relieved Cano with one on and one out in the eighth, allowed a single and then gave up Bader’s bomb. Coulombe finished with a line of 2 runs allowed on 2 hits (1 HR) in 0.1 inning, tagging Cano (0.2 IP, 1 R, 1 H, 1 WP) with the loss.
Chris Vallimont (0.2 IP, 1 H, 1 K) made his MLB debut and finished out the eighth inning and was rewarded with a trip back to Norfolk.
All-Star and HR Derby participant Adley Rutschman went 3 for 5 with a double, 1 run scored and 1 RBI.

Anthony Santander went 2 for 4 with a double.
Ryan O’Hearn went 2 for 4 with a run scored and 1 RBI.
Cedric Mullins went 1 for 4 with 1 RBI.
Gunnar Henderson went 1 for 5 with 1 run scored.
