Bradish strikes out 10, allows 2 home runs in 6 strong innings in Orioles’ 5-0 loss to Red Sox

August 27, 2025 by Baltimore Baseball

BALTIMORE–What happened? Kyle Bradish’s first start since havingTommy John surgery on June 19th, 2024 went very well. He gave up two solo home runs, allowed two other hits in six efficient innings, striking out 10 without a walk.

Unfortunately, the Orioles were completely baffled by Lucas Giolito and lost for the fifth time in their last six games, 5-0, before 14,776 at Camden Yards on Tuesday night.

Trevor Story homered to begin the second inning, and David Hamilton hit a home run to start the third.

Bradish (0-1) threw 81 pitches and didn’t show any signs of rust. The 10 strikeouts was just one off this career high.

“There were definitely a lot of emotions just throughout the whole day. A lot of nerves as the game got closer and just looking back at kind of the journey I’ve been on the past 14 months to get back to where I am here,” Bradish said. “So it was just a lot and just really tried to manage that. Obviously, I was amped up the first inning, but felt like I was able to control them and settle in and get through whatever it was, six innings?”

Giolito (9-2) allowed a single to Alex Jackson in the third, a double to Dylan Beavers in the fifth and two singles  in the sixth to Alex and Jeremiah Jackson. He struck out eight and walked one in eight innings.

The Orioles (60-72) were shut out for the 14th time this season.

The Red Sox (73-60) added a run in the eighth against Yaramil Hiraldo when Ceddanne Rafaela doubled, moved to third on Hamilton’s sacrifice bunt and scored on a roller by Carlos Narváez.

Hiraldo is expected to be optioned by the Orioles to Triple-A Norfolk.

Leftfielder Dylan Beavers misplayed Hamilton’s fly ball into a two-run double in the ninth.

How was the day for Bradish? Even though it had been more than 14 months, Bradish attempted to make his day normal.

“I went out there probably an hour and a half before game time,” he said. “I usually do that regardless, just kind of get a feel for the weather and the brightness. But I was out there listening to music and just kind of taking it all in. It’s been a long journey to get back here, so very grateful to be able to throw today.”

The night began feeling normal shortly before gametime.

“I would say probably after my pregame bullpen I was walking in, it all felt normal,” Bradish said. “After that first inning the nerves kind of went away and I just felt like I was back to doing what I was meant to be doing.”

How did Bradish look? Interim manager Tony Mansolino had expectations for Bradish.

“I think he exceeded them,” he said. “That one slider to Story kind of backed up on him a little bit and then Hamilton put a nice swing on a sinker. But you go out there and throw six, 10 — two hits that kind of hurt him, they jumped him — and super thrilled with what he did.”

Mansolino last saw Bradish pitch in June 2024, and it was vintage Bradish to him.

“Looks pretty good to me,” he said. “The two fastballs, and then the two breaking pitches and just a whole thing. Some of those sliders probably backed up a tick. I think he’ll kind of figure that out as he gets used to throwing the major league ball at the major league level and just controlling his emotions and everything that kind of went into today.

“This was a big moment for him so he was pretty hyped up. I looked out there in the first inning, and he looked like he was huffing and puffing a little bit in the first inning for me, which is abnormal, but that’s just the emotions and the nerves and everything kind of coming out. But handled it, controlled it, threw the ball great.”

Alex Jackson, Bradish’s catcher, had never caught him, but struck out in two at-bats against him.

“He looked really good out there,” Jackson said. “Command was excellent. Attacking the zone. Obviously, unfortunately, a couple barrels found some baseballs. But overall, he threw the ball really well, and it was a lot of fun working with him tonight.

“A lot of that is just building a relationship, having conversations, going over game plan, and when he executes like he does and hits the target, it makes it more kind of enjoyable and easier at the same time. But he’s got electric stuff, and it was a lot of fun.”

Boston manager Alex Cora knew the two home runs were important.

“I think that’s the only way we were going to score runs against him,” he said. “That was electric. Good for him. It’s so tough to come [back] from injuries. That stuff was really good. The fastball was explosive, the sinker was great. It was really tough to hit him. One of the best we’ve faced this year.”

What does it mean? Bradish’s return was important for the Orioles because he pitched so well after 14 months. It also showed that he still has the ability to be a staff leader, something they’ve badly needed this season.

What’s the stat of the day? Bradish started for the first time in 438 days.

What’s the word? “Throughout the whole process, I really felt confident that I would get back to where I was last year and the year before, and I think that I kind of proved that today. Obviously, there’s a lot more ball to be played, but I think it was a step in the right direction.”-Bradish on how he felt.

What’s going on in the minor leagues? Trey Gibson allowed seven runs on 10 hits in three innings as Triple-A Norfolk lost to Gwinnett, 8-4. TT Bowens hit his 14th home run.

Reed Trimble hit a two-run homer as Double-A Chesapeake beat Reading, 5-2.

Five High-A Aberdeen pitchers held Jersey Shore to three hits in a 4-0 win.

Braylin Tavera drove in two runs as Single-A Delmarva beat Carolina, 4-3.

What’s next? Dietrich Enns (1-2, 4.97) will open for the Orioles on Wednesday night.  Roansy Contreras will make his first appearance of the season after Enns. Brayan Bello (10-6, 3.07) will start for the Red Sox at 6:35 p.m.
