The final Sunday at Camden Yards was not a fun day as the Baltimore Orioles dropped a 10 inning game 7-1 to the New York Yankees (88-68). Erupting for six runs in the tenth, the Yankees lived up to their moniker by hitting a pair of homeruns.
A grand slam homerun to right centerfield with no outs by Ben Rice broke the game open for New York. Rice did not sit well with the Orioles pitchers as he finished the day a triple short of the cycle. The C/1B went 4 for 5 with a double, the aforementioned grand salami, 1 run scored and 5 RBI. Jazz Chisholm Jr added insult to injury with his one out solo homerun to the right field flag court. Anthony Volpe‘s RBI single pushed the Yankees’ seventh run across.
The Orioles did threaten in their half tenth inning, loading the bases with two outs but Ryan Mountcastle struck out swinging , his fourth strikeout of the day, to end the game.
The announced attendance was 31,974 but by the middle of the tenth many of the fans in orange were headed for the exits. In fact, an overhead shot of the seating bowl between innings showed a virtual sea of white shirts and jerseys on the Yankees’ side of the field. The certainly made their presence known vocally throughout the tenth inning.
The game actually started as a pitcher’s duel with Baltimore’s Kyle Bradish matching New York’s Cam Schlittler. Bradish allowed one run on two hits with a pair of walks, nine strikeouts and a hit batter over 6.0 innings while Schlittler allowed a run on three hits with a walk and six strikeouts over 5.1 innings. Neither pitcher factored into the final decision.
Samuel Basallo touched Schlittler for his fourth homerun of the season in the fifth inning. The blast travelled 420 ft. to the right field flag court and was apparently caught by the same fan who ultimately snagged the Rice grand slam ball.
The run allowed by Bradish was of his own making as he issued a one out walk to Trent Grisham before hitting Aaron Judge with a pitch. Rice’s two out single on a 2-2 count then pushed the run across.
Interim Manager Tony Mansolino had this to say after the game of Bradish’s effort, “That’s probably the best we’ve seen him so far, even better than that first outing coming off the IL. The ball was coming out hot, looked good. The fastball was good. The breaking stuff was sharp. Was really good against a really good lineup.”
Six New York relievers combined to limit the Orioles to just one hit ove the final 4.2 innings. Baltimore’s bullpen was not as lucky. Dietrich Enns, Rico Garcia and Kade Strowd (0-1) held the Yankees scoreless over the seventh, eighth and ninth innings, respectively. Strowd came out for the tenth and immediately walked Judge. Keegan Akin relieved Strowd and after allowing a Cody Bellinger single coughed up the Rice grand slam. Akin (0.1 IP, 3 R, 3 H (2 HR), K) gave way to Yaramil Hiraldo (0.2 IP, R, 2 H, BB, K, WP). The tenth inning meltdown pinned to loss on Strowd (1.0 IP, 2 R, UER, BB, 3 K).
By the time Baltimore travels to New York later this week they may face a team going to the Playoffs as they were unable to play the spoiler this weekend.
