Finally, A Series Sweep In ’25

June 2, 2025 by Orioles Hangout

A series sweep is a series sweep, even if it comes over the American League bottom feeders, the Chicago White Sox (18-41). The Baltimore Orioles secured that series sweep with a 3-2 win over the Pale Hose on Sunday. It was Baltimore’s first sweep since the final series of 2024 in Minnesota (9/27-9/29) and the second three game winning streak of 2025.

It all began on the mound with Charlie Morton (2-7) producing a second consecutive quality start; both quality starts came in this homestand. Morton allowed 1 unearned run on 6 hits, walked 1, struck out 7, committed a balk and threw a wild pitch over 6.2 innings to earn the win, his second. He threw 100 pitches (66 strikes) to become the oldest Oriole pitcher to have a start without allowing an earned run, surpassing Mike Cuellar, who did the same on 6/20/1976. Morton was working on a shutout until a sixth when a one-out fielding error by Jackson Holliday allowed Chicago’s Andrew Benintendi to score from second base.

Holliday did redeem himself at the plate, going 1 for 4 with a double and 1 run scored. He scored that run on a Ryan O’Hearn (0 for 2, RBI, BB) sac fly to foul territory in the second inning. The Birds opened the second inning with a Maverick Handley (1 for 3, R) single, Holliday’s double and a Ramon Urias (2 for 4, RBI) RBI-single to score their first run.

The eventual winning run came on a Dylan Carlson (1 for 3, 2B, RBI) RBI-double which knocked Coby Mayo (0 for 4, R) in.

Heston Kjerstad went 1 for 3 with a triple but saw that erased when he was picked off base.

Gregory Soto (0.2 IP, R, H) surrendered a Mike Tauchman homerun in the seventh inning, immediately after entering the game in relief of Morton.

Andrew Kittredge (0.2 IP) finished out the eighth inning and Bryan Baker struck out 2 in the ninth to record his first save of the season.
