The Norfolk Tides defeated the Memphis Redbirds 6-4 on Sunday to move to 9-17 overall behind a strong performance from Dylan Coleman. Despite a rough outing from starting pitcher Thaddeus Ward, Coleman pitched 1.2 innings, surrendering 2 walks, no hits and fanning 1 batter. Coleman also earned the win in relief.
Coleman (2-0, 1.86 ERA) was signed by the Orioles on February 10th and invited to spring training. He pitched 8 innings for the Chesapeake Baysox, giving up 2 runs, 6 hits and 8 walks. He also struck out 8.
Free passes have been Coleman’s biggest Achilles’ heel as he enters his seventh year. The 111th overall pick in 2018, Coleman has been in both Houston and Kansas City’s farm systems for most of his career aside from a few short stints in the majors. Despite the walks, the 28-year-old native of Missouri has boasted a strong season in the minors thus far.
First baseman Coby Mayo was instrumental in the victory, going 2-5 with a triple and a single and scoring twice. The Tides travel to Charlotte on Tuesday to start a 6-game series against the Knights at 6:35 pm EST.
