Giving back to Baltimore: Orioles nominate Kyle Gibson for the Roberto Clemente Award.

September 9, 2023 by Maryland Sports Blog

On December 8th, 2022, veteran pitcher Kyle Gibson and the Baltimore Orioles agreed on a one-year deal worth $10 million. Since signing with the O’s, Gibson has given back to the community of Baltimore in many ways. He has worked with many local organizations like the STAND mentorship. Their mission is to better the lives of young men with experiences that “help them to grow and have a positive impact in the future.” As well as Diamonds on the Rise, who promotes programs that provide a good environment for people that have psychiatric diagnoses and have problems with these diagnoses.

Kyle Gibson has also launched his new program #ALLWIN. He donates food to families in need with every strikeout he records, and it’s totaled over $14,000. Gibson also provides life-saving resources to women who have experienced domestic violence to House of Ruth Maryland with every Orioles win. He’s also challenged his teammates to donate with each milestone. Each personal and team milestone has caused Austin Hays, Cedric Mullins, and Tyler Wells to donate over $35,000. Kyle Gibson has made an impact in each community he’s been apart of in his career.

“This August, Gibson hosted two charity events in the Baltimore community. The first, Swinging for Impact, was a golf tournament at Top Golf benefitting City of Refuge Baltimore, a faith-based organization that helps individuals and families transition out of crisis. This was his third time hosting the event in a different city, significantly contributing to each community where he spends his playing career. In late August, he launched a Fantasy Football League where fans donated to play fantasy football with their favorite Orioles players with proceeds benefiting Help One Now.”

Gibson has raised almost $500,000 over the course of his playing career (MIN, TEX, PHI, BAL). Because of that, he is the Orioles nominee for the Roberto Clemente award. This award is given out every year at the end of the regular season to the player who is most involved in their community. The award is named after Pirates legend Roberto Clemente, who died in a plane crash on December 31st, 1972, while flying to Nicaragua to deliver supplies to earthquake victims.

Kyle Gibson has contributed to the winning ways of the Orioles this season, but it’s his impact off the field that makes him so valuable.
