Gunnar Sets Shortstop Homerun Mark

September 7, 2024 by Orioles Hangout

The Baltimore Orioles lost 8-1 to the Chicago White Sox on Wednesday night. Baltimore’s lone run was a historic one. Leading off the home half of the first, Gunnar Henderson (3 for 4, HR, R, RBI) hit a 402 ft. homerun to right-center field, his 35th of the season. With that homerun Henderson set a new single season homerun record for Orioles shortstops, surpassing Miguel Tejada (34 in 2004) and Cal Ripken Jr (34 in 1991).

Wednesday’s loss prevented the Orioles from sweeping both the home series (2/3) and the season series (6/7) of the White Sox. The Orioles have never completed a season sweep against the White Sox in 123 seasons.

From the beginning of the game when Chicago’s Nicky Lopez led off with a homerun, the White Sox teed off on Albert Suarez (7-5). Suarez, who has been the pitching staff’s Swiss Army knife, allowed 6 runs on 8 hits, including 3 homeruns, walked 2 and struck out 2 over 4.1 innings of work and was tagged with the loss.

Limited to seven hits, the Birds received production from Cedric Mullins (2 for 3, BB, SB), Adley Rutschman (1 for 3, BB) and Anthony Santander (1 for 4).

Jackson Holliday went 0 for 2 with a walk.
