High school sports roundup (Dec. 22)

Here’s a roundup of high school varsity action on Friday, Dec. 22

Girls basketball

South River 59, Chesapeake-AA 37: Skylar Woodyard scored 20 points to lead the visiting Seahawks past the Cougars. Other top scorers for South River included Ryleigh Adams scored 18 points and Karlee Hawkins had eight  points and 10 rebounds.

McDonogh won two: The Eagles (9-2) went 2-1 at the Cherokee Invitational at Harrah’s Casino Resort Convention, Atlantic City, N.J.  McDonogh beat Jasper (Ala.), 57-49; on Wed.; lost to Grayson (Ga.), 52-36, on Thur.; and beat Independence (N.C.), 52-33 on Friday.

Annapolis 44, Arundel 32: The visiting Panthers opened with a 17-5 run to beat the Wildcats. Anna King has 12 points and Lindsay Lyman had 10 points for Annapolis.

Broadneck 42, Southern 31: The host Bruins limited the Bulldogs to three points in the first half. Mackenzie Wharton scored 18 points for Broadneck.

Boys basketball

Mount Carmel 54, Coastal Carolina (N.C.) 34: The Cougars (11-2) beat the Centurions (8-3) in the first round of the Berean Christmas Showcase in Fayetteville, N.C. Mount Carmel faces Porter-Gaud (S.C.) at 1 p.m. Saturday.

Indian Creek 63, Chesapeake-Science Point 59: The host Eagles (3-5) beat the Tigers. Indian Creek faces Kent County in the Governor’s Challenge on Tuesday. Chesapeake-SP travels to Forest Park next Friday.

John Carroll wins two: The Patriots (8-5) won their second straight game at the Seahawk Classic at Hilton Head, S.C. Friday.  John Carroll beat Hilton Head Prep (S.C.) to advance to Saturday’s championship versus Archbishop Alter (Ohio) at 4:30 p.m. .

South River 75, Chesapeake-AA 32: Liam Barney scored 23 points to lead the visiting Seahawks past the Cougars. Other top scorers for South River included: James Crimaudo (10 points, 10 rebounds), Jack Schrader (14 points) and Jaden McDuffie (10 points).
