It’s Cedric’s World And We’re Amazed

August 15, 2023 by Orioles Hangout

Sunday’s 5-3 10-inning win over the Seattle Mariners was the Baltimore Orioles second consecutive suck win in the Emerald City. The win would not have happened if it were not for the efforts of Cedric Mullins, who was not in the starting line-up. Mullins entered the game in the sixth inning as a defensive replacement for Ryan O’Hearn (0 for 3). The sequence of events that was orchestrated by Mullins will be talked about for a long time to come and, in fact, have caught national attention.

The game was tied at 2 apiece going into the ninth inning. Jorge Mateo (0 for 0, 1 R) pinch ran for Jordan Westburg (1 for 4, 1 2B), who had doubled with one out. Mateo advanced to third on a balk and running on contact, scored on an Adley Rutschman (1 for 5, 1 RBI) fielder’s choice to pitcher Andres Munoz, getting his “oven mitt” covered left hand under the tag of catcher Cal Raleigh and nearly taking out home plate umpire Dan Iassogna.

Down by one in the bottom of the ninth, Ty France sent a ball 394 ft. to center that Mullins acted like Spiderman and scaled the fence to catch the ball, pull it back in play and rob Seattle of a homerun. The next batter, Dominic Canzone did tie the game with his second homerun of the season. In the tenth, with one on and one out, Mullins hit a ball foul down the right field line, just missing a homerun. Two pitches later Mullins hit a ball 364 ft. for what became the winning runs.

Nick Vespi (1-0) got the final out of the ninth (0.1 IP) to get credit for the win and Shintaro Fujinami (1.0 IP, 1 K, 1 WP) pitched the tenth to earn his first save as an Oriole.

Ryan Mountcastle went 2 for 5 with 1 run scored.

Jordan Westburg and Adam Frazier each went 1 for 4 with a double.

Starter Kyle Bradish allowed 2 runs on 5 hits with a walk and 7 strikeouts over 6.0 innings pitched.
