Jackson Was Key To The Game 2 Win

July 17, 2025 by Orioles Hangout

The Detroit Tigers swept the New York Mets (53-41) in Thursday’s day-night doubleheader. Oh wait, my bad, it was the Baltimore Orioles who swept the DH despite the narrative being spun by General Manager Mike Elias, Interim Manager Tony Mansolino, Gunnar Henderson and MASN’s Melanie Newman today that the ’25 Orioles are going to be the second coming of the ’24 Tigers. Each proclaimed that the O’s could do exactly what the Tigers did last season, but I digress.

Baltimore won the nightcap 7-3 and Jackson played a big part in that win, just not the Jackson we’ve come to expect. Backup catcher Alex Jackson, acquired Sunday, hit two doubles, scored two runs and produced a RBI to lead the Baltimore offense in his first start as an Oriole.

Jordan Westburg hit a two-run homerun in the second inning and had three RBI with two runs scored in the game.

Cedric Mullins had 2 hits, including a double, scored a run and stole a base.

Henderson doubled among his three hits and scored a run.

Colton Cowser had a hit and 1 RBI.

All of this came in support of starter Tomoyuki Sugano (7-5) who, after surrendering two first inning runs, settled down to give the Orioles a quality start. Sugano allowed 3 runs on 4 hits with three walks and two strikeouts over 6.0 innings, earning the win.

The bullpen took it from there with Andrew Kittredge, Gregory Soto and Seranthony Dominguez combining to allow 1 hit and 1 walk while striking out 4 over the final 3.0 innings.

The doubleheader sweep was Baltimore’s first since 6/25/2016 and put the Birds eight games under .500 for the first time since 5/6/2025. Time to stay in single digits under .500. The Orioles are currently 6.0 games behind in the Wild Card race, pending the completion of tonight’s MLB schedule.

BOX SCORE

2025 Record: 42-50
