The Baltimore Orioles traded for catcher James McCann in the offseason to be a backup to All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman. McCann was acquired for a player to be named later and from the New York Mets. When the Orioles traded for McCann backup catcher was something of a huge need for them. If Adley Rutschman was not catching the difference between him and the backup left a glaring hole in the lineup.
McCann got off to a slow start offensively but since the All-Star break has really turned his bat around.
With McCann providing offense at the bottom of the Orioles lineup it gives the Orioles more opportunities to rest Rutschman. McCann is one of the few veterans on the Orioles team at 33 years old and is a very good defensive catcher.
McCann right now has 12 doubles four home runs and is batting .243 for a backup catcher those are very solid numbers and they are rising each game. The Orioles are currently 30 games over .500 and have three game lead in the AL East.
Keeping players healthy and fresh has been a focus point of the Orioles all season. It is vitally important to the Orioles to keep Rutschman’s bat in the lineup one way or another but not having a huge drop-off when he gets a rest day is very important. McCann has been providing offense, good defense and leadership to this young Orioles team.
