The Baltimore Orioles defeated the Kansas City 6-1 on a sunny Monday afternoon. The win was the Orioles fourth in five games and their sixth in nine games. It also gave the Orioles a series win.
The win began on the mound. Tyler Wells (1-2) started and put in a quality start, the third such start in a row for Orioles pitchers. The young right-hander scattered 5 hits over 6.0 innings, allowing 1 run and striking out 3. Wells allowed a Bobby Witt, Jr single to lead off the game. After stealing second, Witt, Jr scored on a Ryan O’Hearn single. Wells allowed a second inning single and promptly retired the next 10 Royals batters he faced before allowing a fifth inning single. The Royals did have a double off Wells in the sixth, but that was all they could do.
The bullpen did their part, combining to work the final 3.0 innings and allowing 1 hit, 3 walks and striking out 4 to preserve the win for Wells.
The O’s bats did all their damage in the fifth inning, scoring all six of their runs in that frame. Tyler Nevin (0 for 3, 1 run scored, 1 BB) scored the first run. Anthony Bemboom (1 for 3, 1 2B, 1 run scored, 1 BB), Jorge Mateo (1 for 4, 1 run scored, 1 RBI, 1 SB), Trey Mancini (3 for 4, 1 run scored, 1 RBI) and Anthony Santander (1 for 3, 1 run scored, 1 BB) followed before Austin Hays (2 for 3, 1 2B, 1 run scored, HBP) scored the sixth and final run.
Ryan Mountcastle went 1 for 4 with 2 RBI.
The Birds move on to Saint Louis for a three game series with the Cardinals.
