The Baltimore Orioles have named Kyle Gibson their Opening Day starter as they play the Boston Red Sox on March 30th. Gibson was one of the Orioles few free-agent signings and was essentially brought in to replace Jordan Lyles.
Gibson has a career 4.52 era and has been an All-Star one time in his career. Last season, Gibson posted a 5.05 era pitching for the Philadelphia Phillies. The numbers for Gibson are not too impressive but he has been solid in Spring Training notching a 1.29 era in four games.
Spring Training numbers are what they are but it is really hard to gauge players with Spring Training numbers. Some pitchers throw certain pitches just to work on them, when in a normal game they probably would not throw a certain pitch.
Gibson will likely be the “innings-eater” type of pitcher for the Orioles like Jordan Lyles was last season.
Personally, I would have seen someone like Dean Kremer who has been with the Orioles and had a breakout season last year. The Orioles have a lot of options for starting pitching this season but it looks like the early season rotation is set. I think Cole Irvin, Dean Kremer, Kyle Bradish and Grayson Rodríguez will get the balls to start the season.
