In a game that was moved up three hours due to the threat of inclement weather, the Orioles defeated the Oakland A’s 1-0 on Wednesday.
Ryan McKenna (1 for 3, 1 double, 1 run scored, 1 walk) scored the Birds lone run. Anthony Santander (2 for 4, 1 double), Cedric Mullins (1 for 3, hit by a pitch) and Chris Owings (1 for 3) were the entirety of teh Baltimore offense.
The real story of the game was the Orioles’ pitching. Starter Jordan Lyles (1-1) allowed 5 hits, walked 1, struck out 6 and hit a batter over 5.0 innings. He faced 21 batters and tossed 89 pitches (61 strikes) in doing so. Lyles was the beneficiary of the O’s “offense” and recorded his first win of the year.
The bullpen took the ball from Lopez and ran with it. Paul Fry (1.0 IP, 1 K) and Dillon Tate (1.0 IP) pitched clean innings while Bryan Baker allowed 2 hits and struck out 1 in one-third of an inning.
Jorge Lopez did the rest. The right-hander earned his second save with a 1.2 inning effort in which he struck out 3.
For a game at least, the pitchers made the “offense” hold up in a win.
