Mullins provides key hit and steal as Orioles outlast Yankees, 7-6, in 10 innings

June 20, 2024 by Baltimore Baseball

NEW YORK—After executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias announced that starting pitcher Kyle Bradish had season-ending Tommy John surgery on Wednesday and reliever Danny Coulombe had bone chips removed from his left elbow on Tuesday, the Orioles managed to outlast the New York Yankees, 7-6, in 10 innings before another sellout crowd of 47,155 at Yankees Stadium.

Cedric Mullins’ RBI single against Clay Holmes (1-3) scored Anthony Santander, the automatic runner, with the go-ahead run. Then, with Ramón Urías up, Mullins took off for third. Yankee catcher Jose Trevino’s throw was wild, and Mullins not only stole third but scored what proved to be the winning run. The Orioles had four steals.

Ben Rice’s sacrifice fly against Dillon Tate cut the Orioles’ lead to one run in the bottom of the 10th. Rightfielder Anthony Santander made a diving catch on Rice’s fly ball. Oswaldo Cabrera, who pinch-ran for DJ LeMahieu, who had singled, was thrown out trying to steal by catcher Adley Rutschman. Trevino walked, but Tate struck out Jahmai Jones for his first save since October 2nd, 2022.

Without Bradish, who was excellent in his limited starts this season, they’ll need better starts. Oriole starter Cade Povich managed to give up just one run on one hit in 4 2/3 innings, but he walked five batters and struck out one.

They’ll also need to replace Coulombe, who Elias thinks could return in September.

Jacob Webb allowed two hits in 1 1/3 innings in relief of Povich, whose only hit allowed was a leadoff single by Anthony Volpe. He walked four of his first 10 batters, but the only run he gave up came on Gleyber Torres’ sacrifice fly in the first.

Yankee starter Gerrit Cole, who had been out with an elbow injury, made his first start of the season.

The Orioles scored on Ryan O’Hearn’s first-inning double, which scored Gunnar Henderson.

After Mullins singled against Cole to lead off the fifth, Ron Marinaccio allowed a two-run home run to Urías, his fourth. O’Hearn’s second RBI double scored Jorge Mateo, and the Orioles led, 4-1.

Povich was removed after walking Juan Soto with two outs in the fifth, and Webb struck out Giancarlo Stanton

Webb got the first two outs of the sixth before DJ LeMahieu singled. Cionel Pérez loaded the bases by walking Ben Rice and Trevino before Jones flied to center.

Luis González hit Gunnar Henderson in the back with one out in the seventh. He scored on Ryan Mountcastle’s double to right to give the Orioles a 5-1 lead.

Pérez allowed singles to Volpe and Soto to start the seventh and Yennier Cano allowed Giancarlo Stanton’s 18th home run to cut the Orioles lead to 5-4.

Bryan Baker pitched a scoreless eighth.

The Orioles failed to capitalize on a scoring chance in the ninth when centerfielder Alex Verdugo made a fine, running catch on Santander’s fly ball with the bases loaded to end the inning.

In the bottom of the ninth, Craig Kimbrel (5-2) allowed a leadoff double to Volpe. Soto flied to left, but Stanton singled to left to score Volpe and tie the game, 5-5.

The Orioles (48-25) trail the Yankees (51-25) by 1 ½ games in the American League East.
