New York Mets Prospects Pitch Combined No-Hitter

June 5, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

On Tuesday night, in front of their home crowd, the Brooklyn Cyclones pitched a combined no-hitter for the first time in franchise history. The Brooklyn Cyclones are the High Single-A affiliate for the New York Mets. The Cyclones defeated the Aberdeen IronBirds, the High Single-A affiliate for the Baltimore Orioles, 3-0. The two Single-A teams squared off at Brooklyn’s home field, Maimonides Park.

The Mets Prospects That Pitched A No-Hitter

Winning pitcher Dakota Hawkins made the start for Brooklyn. The former Washington State Cougar has made 13 appearances this season.  Hawkins maintains a 3.48 ERA and 1.07 WHIP this year with a 41:11 strikeout-to-walk ratio. The right-hander struck out two and walked one in five frames against Aberdeen.

Joey Lancellotti came in to work the sixth inning. The former Tarheel has struggled early this season with a 5+ ERA and a 2.00 WHIP.  Lancellotti was bailed out by a stellar, hit-saving catch in right field by Stanley Consuegra. Despite his early struggles, the 26-year-old right-hander struck out and walked one, earning a hold and keeping the no-no intact.

Heading into the seventh inning, Brooklyn called on 6’2 right-hander, Joshua Cornielly. In Cornielly’s second season with Brooklyn, he has settled in as one of the closers for the Cyclones. Cornielly struck out three, walked one, hit a batter en route to his sixth save of the season, and completed the no-hitter.

Brooklyn Offense

In the third inning, Brooklyn’s William Lugo and Consuegra each had one run batted in. Jefrey De Los Santos would add one more run on a solo home run for the Cyclones. Those three runs would be all Brooklyn needed to put away Aberdeen with the pitching display that was taking place.

The X-Factor

The Cyclones had the benefit of Major League talent behind the plate tonight.  Francisco Alvarez is currently rehabbing with Brooklyn and caught the entire no-hitter.

He’s baaaaaaaaaaack. 💪🧌

With the Mets turning in a season that fans would like to forget, this should be a ray of light. Francisco Alvarez is looking healthy, and fans should be excited that he was capable of catching nine full innings.  The Mets prospects turned in some solid pitching, clutch hitting, and a web gem. There is a lot to get excited about in Brooklyn.
