No Broom Needed

July 21, 2023 by Orioles Hangout

Wednesday marked the sixth time in the 2023 season that the Baltimore Orioles faced the possibility of being swept by an opponent in a series and for the sixth time that eventuality was avoided. The team’s 8-5 win over the Los Angeles Dodgers prevented the sweep; the last time the Orioles had the broom used on them was May 15, 2022, a streak of 70 consecutive series.

The Dodgers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the top of the first. Starting pitcher Dean Kremer threw 37 of his 91 total pitches and faced 7 batters in the inning and lasted only 4.2 innings. He allowed 5 runs on 4 hits with 2 homeruns surrendered, 4 walks and 1 strike out.

The Orioles answered with 4 runs of their own in the home half of the first and never looked back, building a 6-2 lead after three innings on the way to the win. The key hit in the first was a Ramon Urias (2 for 3, 2 2B, 3 RBI, 1 BB) two-out, 2 RBI double. Urias also made a highlight worthy play at third in the third inning.

Danny Coulombe (3-1) relieved Kremer and restored order to the game, giving up just 1 hit while striking out 3 over 2.1 innings. He allowed Yennier Cano (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K) and Felix Bautista (1.0 IP, 1 H, 1 K) to close out the game and was credited with the win for his effort while Bautista earned his 26th save.

Gunnar Henderson went 1 for 3 with 3 runs scored, 1 RBI and a walk and hit his 15th homerun in the fifth inning.
