Police were investigating the second officer-involved shooting in two days in Southeast Baltimore on Tuesday evening.
Officers responded shortly after 9 p.m. to reports of a suspect threatening a victim with a firearm in the 6800 block of Banks Street.
After responding to the scene, officers canvassed the area and found the suspect riding a bicycle in the 6500 block of Eastern Avenue.
Officers proceeded to give chase when the suspect attempted to flee down an entrance ramp to Interstate 95.
The suspect subsequently brandished his weapon and began shooting in the direction of two officers. Neither was struck and both responded by returning fire, striking the suspect.
“This is another example of our officers doing exactly what we want them to do,” said Commissioner Richard Worley.
The suspect was pronounced dead shortly thereafter. The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner was on the scene.
“This could have been completely avoided had the suspect just complied with the officers’ demands,” added Worley.
The Maryland Attorney General’s Independent Investigation Division, which handles all officer-involved shootings, will oversee the investigation.
Just a day earlier, officers shot a man who was brandishing a knife amid what they believed to be a mental health crisis in Bolton Hill.
