Opportunity Wasted

April 14, 2025 by Orioles Hangout

On a Sunday when the Baltimore Orioles held the lead three different times and had a late-inning three run lead (6-3 after six innings), the Toronto Blue Jays scored 3 runs in the eighth and 1 in the tenth to win 7-6 in extra innings. Failing once again, to string two wins in a row.

The Orioles were limited to just one hit, an Adley Rutschman (1 for 5, 2B, RBI) double in the ninth, over the final four innings. That is not exactly the way to ride any momentum that Saturday’s win provided.

The Orioles scored single runs in each of the first four innings with the big blows being a Ryan Mountcastle (2 for 4, HR, 2 R, RBI) homer in the second and a Tyler O’Neill (1 for 5, HR, R, RBI) homer in the fourth. Mr. Splash was charged with an error on O’Neill’s blast.

Back to back fielding errors by Bo Bichette and Vladimir Guerrero Jr allowed the Birds to plate two sixth inning runs for a lead they would eventually lose.

Gunnar Henderson went 3 for 5 with a triple and 2 runs scored.

Heston Kjerstad went 1 for 4 with a double and 1 run scored.

Ryan O’Hearn went 1 for 5 with a stolen base.

Cade Povich started and lasted 4.2 innings, allowing 2 runs on 7 hits (HR) while walking 1 and striking out 2. He threw 76 pitches (48 strikes) in the effort.

The bullpen was a mixed bag, possibly showing signs of early-season over use. Keegan Akin (R, 2 H, BB, K) gave up a run in 0.2 inning and Gregory Soto allowed 3 runs on 3 hits in 0.2 inning.

Bryan Baker (0.1 IP, K), Seranthony Dominguez (1.1 IP, K) and Yennier Cano (1.1 IP, 2 H) did their jobs.

Matt Bowman (0-1) took the loss for allowing 1 unearned run on 2 hits in the 10th inning.

The Orioles need more length from their starters; no matter how many off days they have, the bullpen is expected to cover too many innings. The fact that Felix Bautista is limited in use following elbow surgery means that someone else has to step up and carry the load, especially early in the season.

BOX SCORE

2025 Record: 6-9

Next Game: Tues. 4/15 @ 7:05 pm vs. Cleveland Guardians
