BALTIMORE—The Orioles are waiting for results of starting pitcher Dean Kremer’s MRI. Kremer left Friday night’s game after throwing three hitless innings with right forearm discomfort.
Interim manager Tony Mansolino said that the team would have a better idea of the 29-year-old right-hander’s status after Saturday night’s game against the Dodgers.
The Orioles put 27-year-old right-hander Chayce McDermott on the medical taxi squad for the game in case Kremer is placed on the 15-day injured list.
McDermott was recently converted to the bullpen at Triple-A Norfolk. He allowed seven runs on eight hits in 7 2/3 innings in two appearances with the Orioles. At Norfolk, he’s 2-7 with a 6.38 ERA. As a reliever, he’s 1-2 with a 4.91 ERA.
In McDermott’s last 11 relief outings, he’s given up just one earned run.
“I feel like I’ve adapted to it pretty well,” McDermott said of his new role. “It was interesting … I’ve never really thrown out of the ‘pen, different mindset, but I feel like it’s gone pretty well.”
McDermott has a new baby girl, Mylee, who was born 3 ½ weeks ago. He’s eager to do well in the bullpen
“If it’s what gets me to the big leagues, it’s what gets me to the big leagues,” McDermott said.
“The tough part about being a starter is that if you have a really bad game, you have to wait five, six days for the next one. As a reliever, you can go, ‘I’ll get it tomorrow,’ and you don’t have to dwell on it. It’s nice having that excitement of always going in the game and build off good outings and forget bad outings.”
