Orioles Dominate in Sweep of the Twins

April 17, 2024 by Maryland Sports Blog

The Baltimore Orioles bring out the broomsticks and sweep the Minnesota Twins in a three-game series at home in Camden Yards. The O’s powered their way through this series hitting three home runs in the past five games. This is the second-longest streak of its kind in MLB history, only behind the 1987 Orioles who did it in six straight games. This wasn’t the only home run streak, as reigning rookie of the year Gunnar Henderson clubbed a homer run in each of the three games against the Twins. With the series sweep the Orioles are now half a game behind the New York Yankees for first place in the AL East.

The Westy Gun Show

Gunnar Henderson had himself a series against the Twins. In 13 at-bats Henderson tallied seven hits, with three being home runs, and five RBIs. Henderson raised his OPS to .949 and has an above-league average OPS+ sitting at 163. Jordan Westburg has proven that he can be a consistent MLB bat so far this season. In the series, Westburg tallied six hits in 11 at-bats, with two doubles, a home run, and four RBIs. Birdland faithful have high hopes that Gunnar will insert himself into AL MVP conversations and have been loving the production of Westburg manning the hot corner.

What A Story

Albert Saurez, a baseball journeyman made his 2024 debut Sunday afternoon and dominated. This was Suarez’s first appearance in the MLB since 2017 with the San Francisco Giants. Suarez pitched 5.2 shutout innings, only allowing three hits, with four strikeouts. Suarez received this opportunity when Tyler Wells, went down with right elbow inflammation. After a great first start and Wells being placed on the 15-day IL, Suarez could see another opportunity on the mound for the O’s very soon.

Momentum Shift

The Orioles secured their fourth straight victory 4-2 off of a Cedric Mullins 2-run walk-off home run Sunday afternoon. The O’s used this series against the Twins to find the consistency that led them to win the AL East division crown last season. With momentum on their side, the Orioles will travel to Kansas City over the weekend to face the Royals in a three-game series. The O’s won the first series earlier in the month and are looking to start off their road trip strong before heading to Anahiem to face the Los Angeles Angels.
