What happened? Jazz Chisholm Jr.’s two-run, bad-hop double keyed a three-run seventh inning that gave the Miami Marlins a 6-3 win over the Orioles on Wednesday night.
It was the Orioles’ third straight loss, and second in a row against Miami (37-65). They were held to four hits.
Xavier Edwards led off the seventh with a single against Jacob Webb (1-5). Cionel Pérez threw a wild pitch and walked Nick Gordon. Both runners moved up on Ali Sánchez’s sacrifice and scored on Chisholm’s double. Bryan De La Cruz singled to score Chisholm.
“A frustrating inning,” manager Brandon Hyde told reporters in Miami.
The Orioles (60-41) are 11-16 since June 20th. They maintain a 1 ½ game lead in the American League East because the Yankees lost to the Mets.
Hyde said that second baseman Jorge Mateo had a dislocated left elbow and would “miss some time.” Connor Norby will be recalled from Triple-A Norfolk to replace him.
“He’s going to get some more tests. It’s really, really unfortunate,” Hyde said. “I feel terrible for him. We’re going to miss him.”
Chayce McDermott made his major league debut and allowed three runs on five hits in four innings.
Colton Cowser hit a three-run double against Huascar Brazoban in the sixth to tie the score, 3-3.
Edwin Cabrera allowed one hit in five innings before loading the bases in the sixth.
“That was really a frustrating game, facing a guy that walks 20 percent of his hitters with a 7 ERA,” Hyde said. “We got a bases-loaded double, and that was pretty much it. Not our best at-bats.”
Andrew Nardi (2-1) threw a perfect seventh and former Oriole Tanner Scott pitched a hitless ninth for his 18th save.
Anthony Santander extended his hitting streak to 10 games.
How did McDermott pitch? McDermott pitched three scoreless innings. Josh Bell led off the fourth with a home run. Three straight singles led to another run, and Gordon’s sacrifice fly made it 3-0.
McDermott walked two and struck out three in four innings.
“I thought he threw the ball well, especially early,” Hyde said. “His stuff was good. He ran into a lot of pitches there in the fourth inning.”
“A little bit nervous but at the same time overjoyed, a little bit emotional,” McDermott told reporters in Miami.
“Disappointed a little bit, didn’t execute some pitches. Wanted to give the team a chance to win. I think that’s the main reason everyone’s here and I feel like I really did that. There’s a lot of disappointment, but I feel like I handled myself pretty well at the same time. A chance to learn.
“I think I could have done better. The splitter was off today. I feel like that’s been a really big pitch for me recently. The misses led to some misses with the fastball, and that put me in bad counts. These guys are big league hitters. They’re going to expose me on some of those. That’s a thing to learn from.”
McDermott’s next turn could come in a Monday doubleheader against Toronto. Cade Povich could be recalled as the 27th man to pitch the other game.
What’s the word? “This morning waking up it felt a lot different, but by the time I got on the field, it felt the same.” –McDermott on making his major league debut.
What does it mean? Mateo’s absence opens an opportunity for Norby, who replaced him on the roster last month after he suffered a concussion. Norby’s name has been mentioned in trade talks, and this could be a complicating factor.
“He’s going to get some regular playing time,” Hyde said. “He’s going to be in there tomorrow and hopefully give us a little spark.”
What’s the stat of the day? 1-11. The Orioles are 1-11 when held to four hits or fewer.
What’s going on in the minor leagues? Third baseman Nick Maton’s three-run home run gave Triple-A Norfolk a 6-5 win over Jacksonville in the first game of their doubleheader. Cade Povich allowed five runs, four earned, on six hits in six innings. The Jumbo Shrimp held the Tides to two hits in their 1-0 win in the second game.
Rightfielder Dylan Beavers homered twice and shortstop Anthony Servideo also homered as Double-A Bowie beat Akron, 4-2.
Trey Gibson (1-1) allowed four runs, three earned, on five hits and walked five in three innings as High-A Aberdeen lost to Jersey Shore, 8-2.
Shortstop Leandro Arias and third baseman Anderson De Los Santos each homered and drove in five runs in Single-A Delmarva’s 17-5 win over Fredericksburg. Rightfielder Jake Cunningham also homered.
What’s next? Corbin Burnes (10-4, 2.38) will face Roddery Muñoz (1-5, 5.14) at 12:10 p.m. on Thursday as the Orioles and Marlins close out their three-game series.
