Craig Albernaz’s coaching staff is nearly complete. Two more coaches have been hired, making it nine coaches—five new and four holdovers.
On Saturday, the Orioles added Miguel Cairo as infield coach and Joe Singley as catching coach and major league field coordinator.
Cairo, who played 17 seasons with nine major league clubs at seven positions, was the Washington Nationals’ interim manager for nearly half of last season after Davey Martinez was fired.
He was 29-43 with the Nationals but wasn’t retained. Cairo also served as interim manager for the Chicago White Sox in 2022 after Tony La Russa stepped down because of health issues in August. He had an 18-16 record and wasn’t named the full-time manager for 2024.
Cairo is the staff’s first Spanish speaking coach. At 51, he’s the oldest of the nine coaches. He’s also the only coach who has managed in the majors.
At 28, Singley is the youngest coach. He was catching coach, assistant catching director and bullpen catcher for the Miami Marlins last season after two seasons with Cincinnati as bullpen catcher.
Singley replaces Tim Cossins, who was dismissed along with manager Brandon Hyde on May 17th.
Cairo and Singley join bench coach Donnie Ecker, lead hitting coach Dustin Lind and first base coach Jason Bourgeois as new additions. Buck Britton, who served as third base and infield coach after Hyde’s dismissal, pitching coach Drew French, assistant pitching coach Ryan Klimek and bullpen coach Mitch Plassmeyer will return.
There’s no word on the status of senior advisor John Mabry.
The Orioles are likely to add assistant hitting coaches and could add additional coaches.
