Orioles minor league recap 4/30: Rogers gives up four runs in rehab start

The Orioles farm system went winless Tuesday, with Norfolk, Chesapeake, Aberdeen and Delmarva also suffering losses in their series openers.

Triple-A: Charlotte Knights (White Sox) 4, Norfolk Tides 1

Trevor Rogers didn’t make it out of the 2nd inning in his first start at Norfolk and the Tides only mustered three hits in a loss to Charlotte. After allowing two runs over three innings in his first rehab outing with Chesapeake, the 27-year-old lefty struggled in his jump up to Triple-A.

He worked around a leadoff walk to pitch a scoreless 1st, but couldn’t do the same in the 2nd. After walking Omar Narváez on seven pitches, Rogers gave up a double to Bryan Ramos to put runners at second and third. White Sox top prospect Kyle Teel then singled home both runners to put the Knights up 2-0. After another two singles and an RBI groundout, Charlotte was up 4-0. After one final walk, manager Tim Federowicz pulled Rogers, leaving him with a final line of 1.2 IP, 4 H, 4 ER, 3 BB and 2 Ks.

The Tides got a run back in the 3rd after Jordyn Adams led off with a walk and moved to third on a Dylan Beavers single. Coby Mayo then lifted a sac fly to center to score Adams and cut the lead to 4-1. That was the closest Norfolk would ever get, as Charlotte added two more runs in the bottom of the 3rd. The Tides only got two hits from there, a Luis Vázquez double in the 4th and a Dylan Beavers double in the 8th.

While the bats couldn’t do the job, the Tides did get a strong outing from Yaramil Hiraldo. The 29-year-old righty out of the Dominican Republic pitched three shutout innings while racking up four Ks. The scoreless appearance stretched his scoreless inning streak to eight.

Double-A: Hartford Yard Goats (Rockies) 7, Chesapeake Baysox 4

Chesapeake starter Braxton Bragg gave up six runs across the first three innings to put the Baysox in a hole they couldn’t climb out of in their loss to Hartford. Benny Montgomery led off the scoring with a solo HR off Bragg in the bottom of the 1st. It got worse for Bragg in the second, after a pair of errors left the Yard Goats with runners at the corners. Hartford’s Jose Cordova then hit a sac fly to make things 2-0. The Yard Goats would double their lead after a single and another fielding mishap brought home two runs.

The Baysox finally got on the board in the 3rd thanks to Hudson Haskin and Frederick Bencosme. Haskin worked a one-out walk and stole second to move into scoring position. Bencosme then doubled home Haskin to score Chesapeake’s first run and cut the Hartford lead to 4-1.

An error once again derailed Bragg in the 3rd, as Montgomery led off the inning by reaching on an error and then scored on a Kyle Karros double. A single from Byrant Betancourt drove home Karros and gave the Yard Goats a 6-1 lead.

A solo HR in the 6th extended that Hartford lead to 7-1 and it was from there that the Baysox attempted to mount a comeback. They loaded the bases with no outs in the 7th and then scored a run with a HBP. Haskin then singled to center to score two more and cut the Hartford lead to 7-4. Chesapeake failed to extend that, but would get runners on first and second in both the 8th and the 9th. The Baysox couldn’t convert those runners into runs as Creed Willems grounded out for the final out of the game.

High-A: Bowling Green Hot Rods (Rays) 16, Aberdeen IronBirds 7

The Hot Rods scored 14 runs over the last three innings of the game to race past the IronBirds for a blowout win. Orioles top pitching prospect Michael Forret started the game and put up mixed results over two innings. The 21-year-old from State College of Florida, Manatee–Sarasota walked the first batter he faced and then gave up a two-run homer in the top of the 1st. He settled in from there, setting down the next six batters and racking up three Ks. He finished with a final line of 2.0 IP, 1 H, 2 ER, 1 BB and 3 Ks.

The IronBirds got on the board in the 2nd when a leadoff double from Aron Estrada turned into a run on an RBI single from Jake Cunningham. Aberdeen would take the lead on a two-run homer of their own in the 3rd. After Anderson De Los Santos led off the inning with a single, Griff O’Ferrall launched his third homer of the season to put the IronBirds on top 3-2.

The IronBirds held that lead until the top of the 7th, when the bullpen crashed to earth. The inning started with Wyatt Cheney walking the leadoff hitter and giving up another two-run shot to Blake Robertson. Cheney’s replacement, Zane Barnhart, loaded the bases and then forced in Bowling Green’s fifth run on a bases-loaded walk. The Hot Rods added three more runs on an RBI groundout and a two-RBI single.

Vance Honeycutt would claw a run back in the bottom of the 7th, only for former Orioles prospect Mac Horvath to hit a three-run homer in the 8th. The Hot Rods added a solo homer and a Horvath grand slam in the ninth to blow the game wide open. Trailing 16-4, the IronBirds got three runs back in the 9th but never came close to a comeback attempt. O’Ferrall led the way with three RBIs while 2024 first-round pick Vance Honeycutt and Estrada led the IronBirds with three hits apiece.

Low-A: Fayetteville Woodpeckers (Astros) 6, Delmarva Shorebirds 4

The Shorebirds fell into an early 4-1 hole, came back to tie things at four, but couldn’t find a winning run as they opened the series in Fayetteville with a loss. Delmarva struck first with a run in the top of the 2nd, thanks to a Woodpecker error. Cole Urman reached on a two-out single and moved to third on a throwing error by Fayetteville’s starter, Twine Palmer. Luis Guevara then reached on an infield single to score Urman and give Delmarva a 1-0 lead.

That lead wouldn’t last for even half an inning as Delmarva’s Chase Allsup started the bottom of the 2nd by walking the bases loaded. Fayetteville’s Max Holy then launched a bases-clearing triple into right field to give the Wood Peckers a 3-1 lead. Holy scored on a sac fly to give Fayetteville a three-run lead.

Braylin Tavera would erase that lead with one swing in the 4th. After two walks, Tavera jumped on a 2-2 pitch low in the zone and sent it over the left center fence for a three-run bomb, his third homer of the season.

Once again, the lead did not hold as the Woodpeckers scored to go up 5-4 in the 4th. The Shorebirds would get the tying run to second with no outs in the 8th, only to go strikeout, fly out, strikeout and leave him stranded. After Fayetteville got an insurance run in the bottom of the 8th, Delmarva went down in order in the 9th to seal the Woodpecker win.
