Orioles minor league recap 5/10: McDermott gets in work while Tides offense shut out

Elsewhere on the farm, Chesapeake was rained out, while Aberdeen and Delmarva each won with a nice pile of runs.

Triple-A: Nashville (Brewers) 4, Norfolk Tides 0

That’s zero runs on three hits for the Tides, who also drew only two walks while striking out 14 times. Seems familiar to some outings from the big league club lately, doesn’t it? Freshly-optioned Coby Mayo took an 0-3 with a walk in the game, while outfielder Dylan Beavers was 0-4 with three strikeouts. Not much else to say about that, although if you want to feel a little better about it, Nashville’s pitcher who worked over the Tides was top 100 guy Jacob Misiorowski. The 6’7” righty struck out 11 batters in 6.2 innings.

The Sounds scored one run apiece in four different innings of the game. Only one of these was charged to starting pitcher Chayce McDermott, who threw 65 pitches in four innings, allowing a run on two hits and two walks while striking out four batters. McDermott’s two outings since rejoining the Tides have been pretty good, so hopefully he’ll be ready to rip deeper into games soon. There are those who want to see him let it roll in the bullpen.

Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox at Portland (Red Sox) – postponed, rain

The game is scheduled to be made up as part of a doubleheader today.

High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 8, Jersey Shore (Phillies) 6

Eight runs on twelve hits for Aberdeen here. That’s more like it! Starting pitcher Nestor German allowed an unearned run in the first inning but by the time he left the game after the fourth inning, the IronBirds had given him a 6-1 lead. German struck out seven batters in his four innings, allowing three hits and a walk. He’d thrown 79 pitches. One thing I don’t get about the Orioles is why they don’t have their prospects more regularly going for 100 pitch outings.

I’d like to be able to share that some of that eight run output involved Vance Honeycutt, except I can’t, because it didn’t. He took an 0-5 while striking out all five times. The guys who got the most work done were right fielder Austin Overn, whose three hits included a double, and infielder (serving as DH) Leandro Arias, with two hits in five at-bats. Arias scored two runs. Each of Griff O’Ferrall and Aron Estrada had a double as well as a walk.

Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 9, Myrtle Beach (Cubs) 6

The nine runs came on only five hits for the Shorebirds, which is impressive efficiency even if this also means that there wasn’t much of interest in terms of the prospects here. Leading off, outfielder Braylin Tavera took an 0-5 with three strikeouts. Another prospect, Yasmil Bucce, also went hitless, though he drew a pair of walks and scored two runs. Bucce also stole a base, his first of the year.

Delmarva got three runs to open the scoring in the second inning as catcher Cole Urman hit a three-run home run with two outs. They added five more in the third inning, and it’s a good thing they did because by the end of the fifth, Myrtle Beach had pulled back to within two runs at 8-6. Starting pitcher Sebastian Gongora struck out five batters in four innings while allowing two runs.

Bonus Florida Coast League

Mentioning this game mostly because outfielder Enrique Bradfield Jr. has started up a rehab assignment to get back into form and rejoin Chesapeake, where he was before hurting his hamstring about a month ago. In this game, Bradfield had two hits and a walk in four times up to the plate. The FCL Orioles lost to the Pirates, 6-4.
