Chesapeake and Delmarva both played doubleheaders while everyone else was rained out.
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides vs. Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins) – Suspended
Rain put a stop to this game almost immediately, as Samuel Basallo was batting in the bottom of the first inning. It will be continued later today as part of a double-header.
Double-A: Akron RubberDucks (Guardians) 7, Chesapeake Baysox 5 – Game 1
There were some noteworthy performances in the Game 1 loss for the Baysox. Jeremiah Jackson led the offense with three hits, two of which were doubles. Tavian Josenberger filled up the box score with two hits, a home run, and two runs scored. Max Wagner smacked his first home run of the season. And Noelberth Romero went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI. Creed Willems took an 0-for-4 with a strikeout.
On the pitching side of things, struggles abound. Trace Bright struck out four and only allowed one hit over his four innings, but he also walked five and gave up a home run. Walter Pennington was charged a run in just two-thirds of an inning. Daniel Lloyd coughed up three runs in 1.1 innings of work. Preston Johnson was the lone success story on the mound. He struck out two in his perfect seventh inning.
Double-A: Akron RubberDucks (Guardians) 6, Chesapeake Baysox 1 – Game 2
Chesapeake’s bats went to sleep in the second game of the day. They totalled four hits (all singles) and four walks. Josenberger singled, walked, and scored their lone run. Douglas Hodo had two hits, but was picked off once. Luis Valdez drove in Josenberger on a sac fly in the seventh inning. Willems went 1-for-2 with a walk.
The bad news for the pitchers was mostly reserved for starter Juan Nuñez. The righty gave up five runs (four earned) on three hits, two home runs, four walks, and five strikeouts over 1.2 innings. Yaqui Rivera was charged for a run on four strikeouts, three hits, and a walk over 1.2 innings. Gerald Ogando and Peter Van Loon worked 2.2 and 1.0 scoreless innings, respectively, to wrap up the day.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds at Hudson Valley Renegades (Yankees) – Postponed
Another rainout. It will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Thursday.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 2, Fredericksburg Nationals 1 – Game 1
Delmarva needed just two pitchers to navigate the seven innings of Game 1. Luis De León allowed just one run and struck out three over his 3.1 innings. Jacob Cravey took the win, working 3.2 scoreless innings despite not recording any strikeouts.
The Shorebirds offense managed just two hits, but also worked five walks. Both runs scored in the sixth inning. Kevin Guerrero tripled to bring home Edwin Amparo, and then Maikol Hernández knocked in Guerrero with a sac fly. Cole Urman worked a pair of walks to further boost his .397 season OBP.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 1, Fredericksburg Nationals 0 – Game 2
Perhaps the standout performance of the day belonged to Shorebirds starter Evan Yates. He tossed five shutout innings in which he struck out seven, walked one, and allowed just one hit. The 20th round selection a year ago took home a well-deserved win. Ben Vespi nabbed the save with two shutout innings and two strikeouts.
On offense, Delmarva managed to collect more hits than game one, but scored even less. Colin Tuft’s double was the team’s only extra-base hit. Yasmil Bucce went 1-for-2 and scored the game’s only run. He came home on another Hernández sac fly. Emparo, Guerrero, and Luis Guevara also had one hit apiece.
