While Shorebirds pitching dazzled, the other three affiliates each surrendered nine or more runs.
Triple-A: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (MIA) 10, Norfolk Tides 3
Pitching was not exactly stellar on this night for the Tides, who allowed 17 Jacksonville runners to get on base and 10 of them to score. Starter Kyle Brnovich absorbed the bulk of the damage with eight runs allowed (seven earned) in his five innings of work. On the bright side, a rehabbing Andrew Kittredge tossed a scoreless inning of relief and could be ready to join the Orioles soon. The season is saved!
Only two Norfolk batters got hits, with Dylan Beavers and TT Bowens collecting two apiece. The rest of the Tides lineup was a combined 0-for-21, including an 0-for-3 performance from Coby Mayo. He did draw two walks, at least. Samuel Basallo also walked twice, one with the bases loaded. Basallo started behind the plate for just the second time this season and committed a throwing error.
Double-A: Akron RubberDucks (CLE) 9, Chesapeake Baysox 4
The Baysox trailed for the entire game, giving up three runs in the top of the first and never erasing the deficit. Starter Levi Wells left the game after that rough first inning, though it’s unclear whether that was performance-based or an injury situation.
Frederick Bencosme and Max Wagner both hit home runs in the bottom of the first, and Creed Willems added one in the sixth, accounting for three of Chesapeake’s four runs. It was a rough day defensively for the Baysox, who committed three errors, two of them by first baseman Adam Retzbach.
High-A: Hudson Valley Renegades (NYY) 10, Aberdeen IronBirds 7
The IronBirds held a 6-1 lead in the third before their pitching staff collapsed, giving up nine runs in the span of five innings. Starter Ty Weatherly allowed six of them. The right-hander was bitten by the home run bug and surrendered three dingers, including two by Renegades second baseman Roc Riggio. Reliever Christian Heberholz took the loss with a 1.1-inning, three-run performance.
The offensive star of the game was second baseman Griff O’Ferrall, who collected three hits and three RBIs. Leadoff man Austin Overn reached base twice and swiped a bag. The Orioles’ 2024 first-round pick, Vance Honeycutt, took an 0-for-4 with a walk and a strikeout.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 2, Fredericksburg Nationals (WAS) 0
A sensational pitching performance by the Shorebirds prevented O’s affiliates from suffering a clean sweep tonight. A four-man crew combined to blank Fredericksburg, starting with Yeiber Cartaya (4.2 IP) and followed by relievers Jared Beck (1.1 IP), Kenny Leiner (1.2 IP), and Simon Leandro (1.1 IP). Each had multiple strikeouts for a team total of nine.
The Shorebirds didn’t scrape together much offense, but their two runs sufficed. Kevin Guerrero and Raylin Ramos each provided an RBI single, and Edwin Amparo’s sixth-inning triple was Delmarva’s only extra-base hit. Each of those three guys also stole a base.
