Delmarva was the only winner as Norfolk got rained out, Chesapeake managed only one run and Aberdeen was shut out.
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides vs. Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (Phillies)—PPD. (rain)
The Tides and Iron Pigs were rained out on Tuesday. They’ll make up the game as part of a doubleheader on Thursday, May 29.
Double-A: Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets) 4, Chesapeake Baysox 1
The Baysox didn’t score until the bottom of the 9th as the bats fell largely silent against the Rumble Ponies. Chesapeake managed only two hits Tuesday night; Douglas Hodo III broke up the Binghamton no-hitter with a one-out single in the 5th and Frederick Bencosme led off the 8th with a single.
Chesapeake fell behind 3-0 in the third after Kevin Parada led off the inning with a solo HR before three more Rumble Ponie hits forced across two more runs. Binghamton added an insurance run in the 7th when Alex Ramirez walked, stole second and third and scored on a sac fly. Enrique Bradfield Jr. would score the lone Baysox run when he walked in the bottom of the 9th, moved to second on a ground, moved to third on defensive indifference and scored on a passed ball.
Top prospects Bradfield and Creed Willems combined to go 0-for-7, with the Bradfield walk the only time either got on base. Christian Herberholz led the Baysox on the mound, pitching three scoreless innings in relief with three Ks.
High-A: Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets) 2, Aberdeen IronBirds 0
The IronBirds were shut out in Brooklyn as they dropped their series opener against the Cyclones. Juan Rojas was the story early on for Aberdeen, with the 21-year-old out of Venezuela opening the game with five shutout innings while punching out four Cyclones.
That promising start fell apart a bit in the 6th. Rojas allowed a one-out single to Jacob Reimer, and after a walk and passed ball, Brooklyn had two runners in scoring position. Marco Vargas then singled to center to plate both runners and end Rojas’ evening after 5.1 innings. Despite taking the loss, Rojas lowered his season ERA to 2.76 over 29.1 innings.
The IronBirds had runners on first and second with no outs in the 7th and 8th but failed to capitalize both times. Leandro Arias was the only IronBird who had a productive day at the plate, going 2-for-4 with two singles.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 4, Hickory Crawdads (Rangers) 2
The Shorebirds backed a strong start from 2024 draft pick Evan Yates as they scored a wire-to-wire victory over the Crawdads. Yates, the 20th-round pick out of Cal State Fullerton, struck out seven of the 13 batters he faced, going 3.1 innings while only allowing two walks and no hits. The 22-year-old now has 43 Ks in 32.1 innings for the Shorebirds.
Delmarva gave Yates an early lead to work with by scoring in the bottom of the 1st. Braylin Tavera and Yasmil Bucce started with back-to-back walks and then executed a double steal of second and third. Raylin Ramos then grounded into a fielder’s choice that allowed Tavera to score and give Delmarva a 1-0 lead.
Tavera and Bucce started a rally again in the 5th, leading off the inning with a walk and single. The Shorebirds then scored runs on a groundout to the pitcher, a single to center and a sacrifice squeeze, growing their lead to 4-0.
The Crawdads would get a run in the 8th and the 9th to cut the deficit. In the bottom of the 9th, they had a runner on third with one out, but the runner was left stranded after a strikeout and groundout ended the game.
