The IronBirds were the only O’s affiliate in action as the rain washed away everyone else on Wednesday night.
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides vs. Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies) – PPD/Rain
As the east coast continues to be pounded with rain this week, weather-related cancellations were a theme down on the farm. These two teams are yet to start their series and will play a pair of doubleheaders in the next three days.
Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox vs. Binghamton Rumble Ponies (Mets) – PPD/Rain
There was plenty of rain in Bowie as well. This game will be made up as part of a doubleheader on Thursday.
High-A: Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets) 6, Aberdeen IronBirds 4
The only affiliate to actually play on Wednesday coughed up a four-run lead to lose their second straight game in Brooklyn.
Aberdeen’s offense was productive in the early innings. They scored four times in the first three frames, and then went quiet.
Three of the runs came in the second inning. Austin Overn walked and Jake Cunningham singled with one out. They both stole a base to put two runners in scoring position. Aneudis Mordán singled them both home for a 2-0 lead at the time. Griff O’Ferrall drove in Mordán with a base knock of his own to push the lead to three runs.
Vance Honeycutt led off the third inning with a double. He advanced to third on a groundout and then came in to score on a passed ball to make it 4-0.
Beyond that, there was little to report from the Aberdeen lineup. From the fourth inning on they had one hit (Ryan Stafford double) and four walks, but were unable to push a run across.
Blake Money started on the mound. His first three innings were smooth. He shut out the Cyclones and allowed just one walk and one single early on. But the fourth inning was a disaster that saw him gave up four singles and two walks. On top of that he uncorked a wild pitch. Despite that, the IronBirds clung to a one-run lead when Money was lifted from the game mid-inning. Unfortunately, his replacement, Zane Barnhart, allowed one of his inherited runners to score, making it a 4-4 game after four innings.
The scoring continued in the seventh inning. Dominic Freeberger had taken over on the mound by this point. He issued a walk, allowed a stolen base, threw a wild pitch, issued another walk, and then gave up a sac fly to make it 5-4. A single put runners on the corners, and then Freeberger was replaced by Wyatt Cheney. The runner on first stole second, and then Cheney had a wild pitch of his own, allowed in the runner at third to score the sixth run of the day to seal an IronBirds loss.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds vs. Hickory Crawdads (Rangers) – PPD/Rain
Salisbury wasn’t immune from the soggy weather. The Shorebirds were rained out as well, and so they will play a doubleheader on Thursday as well.
