Orioles minor league recap 5/6: A quiet day for the bats

May 7, 2024 by Camden Chat

MLB: Cincinnati Reds at Baltimore Orioles
Despite striking out five, Bruce Zimmermann could have been better for Norfolk on Sunday. | Mitch Stringer-USA TODAY Sports

Bowie got rained out, and none of the other Orioles affiliates managed to impose their will on the opposition.

Triple-A: Nashville Sounds (MIL) 6, Norfolk Tides 3

Bruce Zimmermann had the start for Norfolk, and it certainly could have gone better: he allowed four runs in five innings. However, only one of those runs was earned, as the Tides were responsible for four errors. Ouch. After Zimm, scoreless outings were tossed by Luis González and Wandisson Charles, but Bryan Baker surrendered two more runs in the ninth, on a two-out walk and home run.

The Tides notched five hits in the game: a home run, three doubles and a single. Hudson Haskin had the long ball, in the second. Coby Mayo (#3 CC prospect) hit an RBI double. Jackson Holliday (#1) doubled and walked twice.

Box Score

Double-A: Erie SeaWolves v. Bowie Baysox – CANCELLED (rain)

A bummer—the Baysox were all set to play tonight as the “Cangrejos Fantasmas” (Ghost Crabs) but the game got canceled due to inclement weather. I hope they get a chance to inhabit their alter egos some other time.

High-A: Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM) 5, Aberdeen IronBirds 2

Here are three tough ways to give up a run: first, Aberdeen starter Levi Wells surrendered a run-scoring balk in the first inning. Then, in the fifth, catcher Creed Willems threw past the third base bag on an attempted steal, allowing the Cyclones to score. Then, Aberdeen reliever Graham Firoved walked in a run before allowing two more on an RBI double.

Aberdeen’s two runs came on a Nick Maton triple to score Enrique Bradfield Jr. (Maton also singled and walked twice). Bradfield Jr. scored again in the seventh on a Mac Horvath single. Matthew Etzel singled and so did Creed Willems.

Box Score

Low-A: Fayetteville Woodpeckers (HOU) 5, Delmarva Shorebirds 2

This was a start-by-committee and one pitcher, Jacob Cravey, got stuck with all the earned runs against. Cravey walked two, allowed three hits, and threw two wild pitches… in a single inning. He steadied himself for two scoreless innings, but in the seventh Cravey allowed two runners and Grabiel Salazar came in and let them both score. Ah, well.

Opener Trey Gibson threw three dominant innings, though, striking out six. And closer Randy Berigüete kept Fayetteville off the board in the ninth.

The offense put up eight hits, Baltimore-born Maxwell Costes notching three of them to push his average to .344. Costes singled home the Shorebirds’ first run in the second. In the eighth, Thomas Sosa (#27) doubled and scored on a groundout. Kevin Guerrero went 2-for-3.
