Norfolk couldn’t overcome a bad Julio Teheran start, but all the other affiliates won.
Triple-A: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (NYY) 12, Norfolk Tides 11 (F/10)
For the second consecutive game, the Tides’ bullpen couldn’t hold the line, as a four-run comeback in the ninth went to waste when Wandisson Charles conceded a run in the tenth inning on a groundout, walk and sac fly and got stuck with the loss.
Charles wasn’t the weakest link, however: the veteran Julio Teheran doesn’t look quite ready for MLB action, to judge from this one. Teheran allowed seven runs (all earned) on nine hits, including two homers, and four walks. Brandon Young came in for the sixth and allowed three earned runs himself.
It was a bummer because Tides hitters had managed to jump out to a 6-0 lead with some loud thumps in the first and second innings. Billy Cook kicked off the scoring with a two-run bomb (his fourth) and in the second, Jackson Holliday (#1) doubled home two more runs, and Daniel Johnson singled home two more.
By the bottom of the sixth, however, it was 11-6 Rail-Riders. Errol Robinson began the comeback with an eighth-inning RBI single. The Tides scored four in the top of the ninth, courtesy of consecutive hits by Blake Hunt, Nick Maton and Hudson Haskin. The game went to extras, but the Tides couldn’t pull out a win.
Billy Cook had the biggest day at the plate, going 3-for-5 with three runs scored and a walk. Jackson Holliday (#1) doubled and walked. Daniel Johnson, 4-for-6 with an RBI, is putting up numbers that are getting hard to ignore (.301 BA, .920 OPS). Nick Maton and Errol Robinson had two hits each. Heston Kjerstad (#5) doubled and walked.
Double-A: Bowie Baysox 3, Binghamton Rumble Ponies (NYM) 0
A trio of top Baysox prospects drove in three early runs, and thanks to a combined four-pitcher shutout, that was all Bowie needed. Dylan Beavers (#8) homered (his eighth) in the first. Samuel Basallo (#2) hit an RBI double as part of a two-hit day. And catcher Silas Ardoin homered.
Seth Johnson threw 3.2 scoreless innings, his only blemish four walks. Ryan Hennen got the win with 2.1 scoreless innings himself. Newcomer Lincoln Henzman, whom the O’s signed to a minor league deal on June 4, chipped in 1.1 innings, striking out one and walking two. And Dylan Heid got the save.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 7, Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM) 6
Down 6-3 in the ninth, the IronBirds offense mounted a four-run rally to seize a thrilling comeback win. Mac Horvath (#12) drove in the game-tying run and the IronBirds surged ahead on a Creed Willems sac fly. Kyle Vrbitsky held the line in the bottom of the ninth and got his first save.
Horvath somehow found the time to reach base four times, hit a home run and steal three bags. Creed Willems drove in three. Adam Retzbach walked twice and singled and Randy Fiorentino singled in a run. Enrique Bradfield, Jr. (#6) went 0-for-5 but he had an RBI groundout and scored.
Four of six Aberdeen pitchers had scoreless outings: Yaqui Rivera (0.2 IP), Zane Barnhart (1.2 IP), Luis Sánchez (W, 1.0 IP), and Vrbitsky. Starter Levi Wells and Moisés Chace had homer trouble, each allowing three runs.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 8, Lynchburg Hillcats (CLE) 4
The Shorebirds had no problem dispatching the Hillcats, scoring eight runs on 11 hits and six walks. Oscar Arias led the way with a 3-for-4 line including a home run, double and three RBIs. Cole Urman homered. Aneudis Mordán and Stiven Acevedo had two hits apiece. Aron Estrada went 1-for-3 and walked twice.
Four pitchers—Eccel Correa, Randy Berigüete, Isaac Solano and Grabiel Salazar—combined to allow four runs on five hits. Berigüete got the win to put him a 3-0 with a 3.57 ERA on the season.
