Aberdeen was the only team to pick up a win, though Holliday and Mayo impressed at Norfolk
Triple-A: Charlotte Knights (CWS) 4, Norfolk Tides 2 – F/10
In his first game back from the IL with elbow inflammation, Jackson Holliday doubled and walked twice from the leadoff spot. He is just DH’ing for now. He and Coby Mayo provided all of the offense the Tides mustered and it was, as you can see, not enough. Mayo singled in Holliday after his double in the third inning and hit a game-tying home run in the 8th inning that ultimately sent the game to extras.
If you’re hopeful that Chayce McDermott might be able to help the Orioles with their pitching woes, today was a decent night for your hope. McDermott struck out eight and walked only one in his 5.2 innings pitched. He gave up two runs, both of which scored on a double in the second inning. It was the only extra-base hit he gave up.
Kade Strowd took the loss in the 10th inning where he had to deal not only with a Manfred Man but also with a throwing error from Connor Norby.
Double-A: Reading Fightin Phils 8, Bowie Baysox 4
The Fightins got on the board early and never relinquished their lead. Baysox starter Trace Bright gave up a two-run homer in the bottom of the first inning and went on to give up four runs in 3.2 innings. His relief, Ryan Long, had a similar pitching line of four runs in 3.2 innings. Long gave up two dingers to Bright’s one.
The Baysox didn’t score until the sixth inning and it was too little, too late. Samuel Basallo homered as part of a two-hit game but most of the damage came from the bottom of the lineup. John Rhodes, Collin Burns, and Ryan Higgins combined to go 6-for-12 with #9 batter Higgins hitting both a double and a home run.
Jud Fabian and Dylan Beavers were hitless at the top of the lineup. Fabian struck out three times.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 9, Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM) 2
Finally, a win! The only one in the farm system on this night. Cleanup hitter Reed Trimble was the offensive star with three hits and a walk. Two of his hits were triples! He knocked in four runs in the game.
Douglas Hodo III doubled, had two walks, and somehow managed to score five runs in this game! He was on base and scored on all three of Trimble’s hits. He also scored on a sac fly after walking, and was hit by a pitch and scored on a bases-loaded walk.
Rehabbing Terrin Vavra singled and walked.
Starting pitcher Michael Forret pitched five shutout innings. The 20-year-old allowed just one hit and one walk. He struck out four.
Low-A: Down East Wood Ducks (TEX) 2, Delmarva Shorebirds 0
The Shorebirds had a terrible time on offense last night. They were no-hit into the seventh inning with their only baserunner in the span reaching on an error. Leandro Arias finally broke up the no-no with one out in the seventh only to later get picked off to end the inning. Their second hit was a single in the eighth where the runner was thrown out stealing. Their third hit, a single in the ninth, was erased on a game-ending double play. Ouch.
Starting pitcher Jacob Cravey lasted 3.2 innings with three hits and three walks. He allowed one run on a sacrifice fly. The other Wood Ducks run came on a home run off relief pitcher Trey Gibson.
