Cade Povich allowed five runs (three earned) over 4.1 innings of rehab with the Tides.

Triple-A: Gwinnett Stripers (Braves) 6, Norfolk Tides 0

Cade Povich’s rehab appearance could have gone smoother. Povich gave up singles to the first three batters he faced before allowing a sacrifice fly and a two-out single. The lefty allowed another run on a pair of extra-base hits in the second and an unearned run in the fourth. He left after 4.1 innings with 7 hits, 5 runs (3 ER), 3 K and 1 BB. He threw 46 of 75 pitches for strikes.

Another rehabber, Jorge Mateo, finished 1-for-3 from the leadoff spot. Samuel Basallo failed to reach base in a pinch-hit appearance, and Dylan Beavers finished 0-for-3. Heston Kjerstad did not record a hit in four trips, and Emmanuel Rivera finished 0-for-2 with a walk.

The Tides never scored.

Cionel Pérez and Yennier Cano both pitched in relief. Pérez allowed a hit and two walks but did not surrender a run. Cano surrendered a run on a pair of hits while striking out two.

Double-A: Altoona Curve (Pirates) 3, Chesapeake Baysox 2

The Baysox cut the lead in half on a throwing error in the ninth, but Chesapeake failed to complete the comeback. The Baysox scored their only other run on a wild pitch in the fourth inning, so the team finished without an RBI.

Chesapeake nearly evened the score with the bases loaded and one out. Max Wagner skied a ball to right field, but Mike Jarvis threw out the potential tying-run at the plate for a game-ending double play. Wagner accounted for half of Chesapeake’s four hits.

Trey “Don’t-Call-Me-Kyle” Gibson allowed a pair of runs on six hits. Gibson only pitched 3.2 innings but still struck out seven and walked four.

High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 7, Hub City Spartanburgers (Rangers) 2 — Game 1

The IronBirds finally provided some good news in Game 1 of a doubleheader. Griff O’Ferrall and TT Bowens combined to go 4-for-7 with 3 RBIs. Catcher Ryan Stafford finished 2-for-3 with a triple and run scored, while Vance Honeycutt finished 0-for-3 with a walk. O’Ferrall helped break things open with an RBI-single in a four-run seventh inning.

Sebastian Gongora struck out six over 4.1 innings of two-run ball. Christian Herberholz earned the win with 2.1 scoreless frames.

High-A: Hub City Spartanburgers (Rangers) 4, Aberdeen IronBirds 3— Game 2

Cohen Achen allowed a run in each of the first two innings, but Aberdeen battled back to tie the game at two. Aron Estrada got the IronBirds on the board with a solo homer in the fourth, and O’Ferrall reset the game with a sac fly in the fifth.

The standard 7 inning doubleheader wasn’t enough. Aberdeen managed one run in the top of the eighth, but Hub City managed two for a walk-off win. Alejandro Méndez took the loss for Aberdeen.

Low-A: Hickory Crawdads (Rangers) 9, Delmarva Shorebirds 3

Delmarva failed to score in the first eight innings before tacking on three in the ninth. Raylin Ramos scored Delmarva’s first run of the game after a wild pitch and defensive indifference. How exactly a team ever becomes indifferent about a run scoring is beyond me, but that’s what the box score said. I guess a nine-run advantage will make a team feel generous.

Braylin Tavera added a solo shot, and Kevin Guerrero drove in the final run of the game with a single.

Starter Evan Yates failed to complete the first inning, but three of his four runs allowed were unearned. Shortstop Joshua Liranzo recorded consecutive errors in the first frame.
