Orioles minor league recap 6/28: Norfolk’s offense steals the show, Kremer and Zimmermann rehab

Coby Mayo homered for the third consecutive game, and Kyle Stowers finished a single shy of the cycle. A rehabbing Dean Kremer pitched into the fifth inning for the Tides.

Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 14, Charlotte Knights (White Sox) 4

The Norfolk Power Company continued to surge on Thursday. The Tides secured a double-digit victory on 10 hits and four homers. Kyle Stowers, Coby Mayo, David Bañuelos and Hudson Haskin all went deep for the Tides.

Mayo left the yard for the third consecutive game. He posted a 3-for-4 line with a double, 4 RBIs, 2 runs, and a walk. Stowers finished a single shy of the cycle on a 3-for-5 night, and Haskin scored three times after walking twice.

Connor Norby went 1-for-3 with a pair of walks from the leadoff spot, but Billy Cook went hitless in four trips. Jackson Holliday did not play with Daniel Johnson (0-for-5) serving as the DH.

The offense stole the show from what could be Dean Kremer’s final rehab appearance before rejoining the Orioles. Kremer pitched 4.1 innings and threw 48 of 75 pitches for strikes. The righty surrendered a pair of homers and allowed four runs on six hits. He struck out five and walked a pair.

Double-A: Bowie Baysox 3, Reading Fightin Phils (Phillies) 2

The Baysox held on after jumping out to an early three-run lead. Silas Ardoin plated the first run of the game with a groundout that scored Matthew Etzel. Ardoin came back for more in the fourth with a two-run single to right field. Frederick Bencosme and Samuel Basallo scored on the play.

Seth Johnson tossed four scoreless innings for Bowie. The former Top-100 prospect allowed three hits, struck out four and walked three. Lincoln Henzman closed out the game with a pair of scoreless frames.

High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 6, Brooklyn Cyclones (Mets) 1

Aberdeen briefly trailed before securing the lead in the sixth and breaking away with a four-run eighth inning. Mac Horvath drove in Aberdeen’s first run with a double and scored the go-ahead run on a wild pitch.

Horvath doubled the lead with an RBI single, and Elio Prado stretched the advantage to three with a double to left field. Carter Young put the nail in the coffin with a two-run homer over the right-field fence.

A rehabbing Bruce Zimmermann (hamstring) allowed one hit over 3.1 scoreless frames. He struck out six and walked one. Like it or not, Zimmermann cannot be ruled out as a potential spot starter in the second half.

Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 4, Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers) 3 — Completion of 6/26

Jake Cunningham snuck in a three-run home run before the game had been paused on Wednesday. Cole Urman scored the fourth run Thursday on a wild pitch, and Delmarva managed to hold on for the victory.

Blake Money took the mound today and tossed five innings of one-hit ball. Money struck out six and did not walk a batter.

The Wood Ducks nearly completed the comeback with three runs in the ninth. Carter Baumler allowed a pair of runs, and Issac Solano managed the save after surrendering a run of his own.

Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 5, Down East Wood Ducks (Rangers) 1 — F/7

Delmarva swept the day with a 5-1 victory in the seven-inning contest. Thomas Sosa led the charge going 2-for-3 with a double and two runs scored. Aron Estrada matched Sosa at 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs.

Riley Cooper and Eccel Correa combined to allow one run on only two hits. Both pitchers struck out five.
