Chesapeake and Delmarva each came out on top of a pitcher’s duel. Also, Norfolk was rained out.
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides at Louisville (Reds) – postponed, rain
The game will be made up as part of a doubleheader that takes place today. We’ll see how much rehabbers Tyler O’Neill, Gary Sánchez, and Jordan Westburg end up playing over the two games.
Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 2, Akron (Guardians) 0
The Baysox only had two hits in the entire game, but this was still enough to take down the win. Both runs scored in the second inning. Adam Retzbach singled to lead off, then scored later in the inning as Anthony Servideo hit a triple. Servideo scored after the next batter, Noelberth Romero, delivered a sacrifice fly. Creed Willems took an 0-4 here.
Chesapeake’s pitching did its part to get a victory, too. They allowed only three hits and one walk all game themselves. Starting pitcher Nestor German struck out four batters over a 5.2 inning outing, with two relievers following him to preserve the shutout.
High-A: Hudson Valley (Yankees) 6, Aberdeen IronBirds 0
Like Chesapeake, Aberdeen only got two hits. Unlike Chespeake, they did not get good pitching along with it. The IronBirds fell behind by allowing two second inning runs, and that’s all it would take for the Renegades.
Griff O’Ferrall had a single and Austin Overn had a double. Those were the only hits for IronBirds batters in the game. It’s rough. The team’s offense has been a continual disappointment. Aron Estrada and Leandro Arias were among those held hitless.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 2, Fredericksburg Nationals 1
Another game where the offense was not plentiful for the Orioles affiliate, yet Delmarva, like Chesapeake, was able to make it work. The Shorebirds only had five hits all game. They held the F-Nats to four hits. That’ll do.
Two of Fredericksburg’s four hits were back-to-back doubles in their half of the third inning, which put them on top. Delmarva tied it with a run in the fifth, with prospect Braylin Tavera driving in his team’s first run with a two-out single. The Shorebirds then took over the lead in the next inning, loading the bases before scoring their second run from a sacrifice fly. Getting a hit to score a run is best, but getting the go-ahead run in on a productive out is the next best thing.
Shoutout to Delmarva pitcher Yeiber Cartaya, a 22-year-old righty, who was brought into the game in the third inning and pitched the whole rest of the game. Cartaya’s outing netted him the win for the night. He entered with two men on base in the third inning and kept them from scoring. Cartaya struck out eight batters over 6.1 innings. He struggled a lot in April, had a more acceptable May, and is off to a nice beginning to June with this game in the books.
