Orioles minor league recap 6/8: Trevor Rogers has another strong start

The Baysox and IronBirds picked up wins last night.

Triple-A: Louisville Bats (CIN) 2, Norfolk Tides 1

The Tides and Bats were scheduled for a doubleheader today, but game two got rained out and will be played tomorrow instead. The game that was played went just seven innings, as is the rule for minor league doubleheaders.

Trevor Rogers started for the Tides and pitched six shutout innings, then lost the game by allowing four two-out singles in the bottom of the seventh to give the Bats a walk-off win. It was another good start from Rogers, though he didn’t have a single inning without runners on base. His final line: 6.2 IP, 11 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 5 K.

The rehabbing Jordan Westburg homered for the only Tides’ run of the game. He also doubled and walked. The Tides had just four total hits, the other two being singles by Vimael Machín and Dylan Beavers. Tyler O’Neill and Gary Sánchez were also rehabbing; both went 0-for-3.

Box Score

Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 4, Akron RubberDucks (CLE) 1

Starting pitcher Trey Gibson gave up just one run on one hit in six innings. I’ll take that! Gibson struck out eight and walked four. The one hit was a home run. Gibson retired the first seven batters before issuing a one-out walk in the third inning.

The offense scored four runs on just six hits thanks to shoddy defense from the RubberDucks. In the third inning, Alfredo Velásquez reached on an error, moved to third on a passed ball, and scored on a sac fly. Then Douglas Hodo III walked, stole second, and scored on an error. The other two runs were more conventional as Velásquez and Jalen Vasquez had RBI singles.

Enrique Bradfield went 0-for-5 with two strikeouts.

Box Score

High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 3, Hudson Valley Renegades (NYY) 2 – F/10

Starting pitcher Luis De León pitched five strong innings. He allowed just one run on four hits and a walk. In the third inning, De León gave up a run on a single and a double, and that 1-0 score held until the eighth inning.

The IronBirds tied the game after a bunt single from Angel Tejada. Tejada got to second base on an error, was bunted to third, and scored on a wild pitch.

The bullpens held the tie until the tenth inning. In the top half, Carter Rusted allowed the extra-inning ghost runner to score via RBI single. But the IronBirds came back with two runs in the bottom of the 10th to walk it off. With the bases loaded (ghost runner, HBP, intentional walk), Griff O’Ferrall picked up the RBI HBP to tie the game. Cunningham then scored the winning run on a wild pitch. Don’t you just love minor-league baseball?

Box Score

Low-A: Fredericksburg Nationals 8, Delmarva Shorebirds 7 – F/10

Jacob Cravey gave up three runs in 4.1 innings, which isn’t great. But he struck out five without walking anyone, so there’s a silver lining, I guess. His relief, Adrián Delgado, was terrible. He gave up three runs in just one inning of work and he walked four.

The Shorebirds were holding on to a 7-6 lead until the eighth inning when the Nats tied the game and sent it into extra innings. Delmarva couldn’t take advantage of their free baserunner, but the Nats did. A two-out, RBI single sealed the walk-off.

The offense had a big day with 11 hits. Every starter had at least one. Yasmil Bucce stayed hot with two hits and a walk, including his fifth home run. Edrei Campos and Maikol Hernández also went deep.
