Norfolk blew a big lead, while Aberdeen and Delmarva won big
Triple-A: Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (NYY) 10, Norfolk Tides 7
The Tides’ bullpen blew a 7-1 lead and wasted a good start from #10 prospect Chayce McDermott. But it was a pretty good game before Corbin Martin and Matt Krook combined to give up nine runs in under two innings.
McDermott surrendered a first-inning home run to Jasson Domínguez, the Yankees’ top prospect. But after that, he settled in well and pitched six innings with three hits and eight strikeouts. McDermott has struggled with walks this season and issued three more last night.
Down 1-0 in the third inning, Jackson Holliday (#1) tied the game with his seventh home run of the season. They went ahead with a four-spot in the fifth inning on home runs from Billy Cook and Daniel Johnson. Two more runs in the seventh made for a comfortable lead before the bullpen fell apart.
Cook had a two-hit, four-RBI game. Johnson had three hits. Holliday added a walk to his home run to reach base twice. And Heston Kjerstad (#5) went hitless.
Double-A: Binghamton Rumble Ponies (NYM) 7, Bowie Baysox 3
Things went very poorly for Baysox starting pitcher Kyle Brnovich. Coming off of a six-inning, no-hit effort in his last start, Brnovich could not get out of the first inning. He faced seven batters and retired just one while giving up five runs. He walked three and allowed three hits, two of which were home runs.
The Baysox scored a solo run in the bottom of the first on a hit by Jud Fabian (#14), his first of three singles on the night. They added two more runs in the bottom of the ninth on a TT Bowens double and Silas Ardoin single.
Dylan Beavers (#8) doubled and Samuel Basallo (#2) had a single in four at-bats.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 14, Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM) 6
The IronBirds offense went wild in this one, with seven out of nine players in the lineup racking up multi-hit games. The leader of the pack was Mac Horvath (#12), who started the game with a solo home run in the first inning and followed up with three doubles. He picked up four RBI in the game.
Above Horvath in the lineup was Enrique Bradfield, Jr. (#6), who did a good job setting the table. He singled three times, stole his 26th base of the year, and scored three runs.
Matthew Etzel, Creed Willems, and Carter Young also had good nights at the plate. Etzel doubled and tripled while knocking in two and scoring twice. Willems had two hits and three RBI and Young doubled as part of a two-hit day.
The big blow for the IronBirds came in the form of a six-run fifth inning when they sent 10 batters to the plate.
All of those runs came in support of Jackson Baumeister (#15), who allowed just three hits and one earned run in five innings. He struck out six, which is good, and walked three, which is not too good.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 12, Lynchburg Hillcats (CLE) 8
Another high-scoring game! The Shorebirds got off to a quick start with a four-run bottom of the first. They also scored four runs in the fifth and again in the sixth.
Aneudis Mordán and Stiven Acevedo both homered in the game. Acevedo hit a three-run shot and Mordán one-upped him with a grand slam. Mordán had a two-hit, five-RBI game. The other big hit in the game came from Anderson De Los Santos, who had a two-run triple.
Starting pitcher Blake Money was lucky his team scored 12 runs as he gave up four runs in four innings. He did strike out six. His relief, Riley Cooper, pitched three innings and allowed one run.
