Everybody but the Baysox won.
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 7, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (MIA) 2
It was bombs away in Norfolk on Sunday, which saw the Tides homer three times, including a two-run jack by O’s No. 1 prospect Samuel Basallo, his second long ball in as many games this weekend. Vimael Machín and TT Bowens both went deep, too. Basallo hit a two-run double, too, to finish with four RBIs on the day.
Every Tides hitter reached base once. Dylan Beavers had two hits, and Heston Kjerstad and Terrin Vavra each had one. Jeremiah Jackson doubled and singled, and has a 1.062 OPS in three games at Norfolk.
Roansy Contreras, Levi Stoudt, and Kade Strowd combined to allow just two earned runs, both charged to Contreras over five innings. Stoudt and Strowd pitched two scoreless innings apiece.
Double-A: Reading Fightin Phils (PHI) 5, Chesapeake Baysox 3
The only loser on the farm on Sunday, but this result can be forgiven in light of the good news that Zach Eflin completed a rehab start, and it wasn’t bad. Eflin got through four innings, allowing two runs on a solo home run and a single-double rally. Nestor German followed with five innings of long relief, allowing three runs (two earned) while striking out five. The unearned run scored on a single that right fielder Reed Trimble bobbled followed by a wild pitch by German and a sac fly.
The Baysox offense didn’t shine in this one, save for one bat, that of Creed Willems, who drove in all three of his team’s runs with a home run and an RBI single. Tavian Josenberger, Alfredo Velásquez, and Carter Young also had a hit or more apiece.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 8, Jersey Shore BlueClaws (PHI) 3
The starting pitching was good in this one, which is helpful as Aberdeen doesn’t have the strongest offense. Also good news: big-leaguer Cade Povich threw three scoreless innings in rehab and struck out three. The lefty has been on the IL with hip soreness and this was his first rehab start. Povich exited after a cautious three innings, and six pitchers followed. Ty Weatherly surrendered two runs in two innings after Povich, Carter Baumler threw a scoreless sixth, and Reese Sharp, Zane Barnhart, Dominic Freeberger and Trent Turzenski combined for one run in the last three innings.
Aberdeen scored two early, then three and three runs in the sixth and eighth innings.
You’ll be pleased to know that Vance Honeycutt hit a two-run single, doubled and only struck out once. Thomas Sosa hit a three-run bomb, singled, and walked twice. Griff O’Ferrall and Leandro Arias had two hits apiece.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 8, Fayetteville Woodpeckers (HOU) 3
Delmarva surged to a win with five late runs. A big seventh inning saw Nate George double in a run, Raylin Ramos hit an RBI single, and Yasmil Bucce make it 8-3 with a run-scoring single of his own. George, Ramos and Braylin Tavera each finished with two hits.
Yeiber Cartaya was drawing the swing-and-misses on Sunday, with eight K’s in 4.2 innings, with two runs allowed. Joe Glassey struck out four in 1.1 innings, and so did Ben Vespi (W, 3-1, 2.87 ERA) in two. Jared Beck struck out two himself. That gave Delmarva pitchers a whopping 18 strikeouts on the day.
