The Baysox got shut out by the rebranded Moon Mammoths, but Aberdeen tossed a combined shutout of its own.
Triple-A: Syracuse Mets (NYM) 8, Norfolk Tides 6
This was a seesaw game that saw Syracuse go up 5-0 before Norfolk came back with a four-run sixth inning, going up 6-5 before relievers Keegan Gillies and Preston Johnson let the game slip away in the eighth and ninth innings.
Norfolk starter Roansy Contreras wasn’t very good, giving up five runs in five innings. He allowed a two-run home run in the first, another homer in the second, and a two-run triple in the fourth, allowing the Syracuse Mets to really pad their OPS’s.
The Tides did make it interesting, with a pair of home runs by TT Bowens, scoring Terrin Vavra and Emmanuel Rivera, and one by Jeremiah Jackson (.385 BA, 1.091 OPS). Rivera also drove in two runs on a pair of singles. Dylan Beavers went hitless, and so did Vimael Machín, Silas Ardoin, Jordyn Adams and center fielder José Barrero.
Double-A: Erie Moon Mammoths 4 (DET), Chesapeake Baysox 0
Erie got its first win since an enviable rebrand by HBO’s John Oliver that has seen them sell out their stadium twice this weekend as the Moon Mammoths. Erie starting prospect Garrett Burhenn shut out the Baysox over five innings, allowing just two hits, and a three-man pen allowed just one hit more.
Chesapeake’s Anthony Servideo managed to put up two of his team’s three hits and even add a walk. Creed Willems walked twice. Douglas Hodo singled and walked.
Starter Nestor German got charged with four runs over 4.0 innings, two of them scoring after he was lifted in the fifth with two runners on. Juan de los Santos didn’t do his starter any favors, but didn’t let in any runs in his own name. Riley Cooper and Daniel Lloyd pitched a scoreless inning apiece.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 4, Wilmington Blue Rocks (WAS) 0
Five IronBirds pitchers combined for a three-hit shutout. First up was Michael Forret, a thirteenth-rounder in 2023 who has a 1.86 ERA in 48 innings. He pitched three innings, allowing just two hits, both singles, and a walk, and passed the baton to Ty Weatherly, who was even slightly better. Weatherly threw three scoreless with a single and a walk allowed. Then Carter Baumler, Trent Turzenski, and Dominic Freeberger combined for three no-hit innings with four strikeouts. Dominance on the mound.
Aberdeen scored its first run on a fielding error that brought home Austin Overn. A pair of doubles by Anderson de los Santos and Angel Tejeda made it 3-0 in the sixth. Thomas Sosa singled in the fourth run.
Vance Honeycutt walked and singled (huzzah!). Aron Estrada reached base three times, including on a triple. Leandro Arias had two hits.
Low-A: Carolina Mudcats (MIL) 5, Delmarva Shorebirds 2
Carolina scored three in the first, and two more in the late innings. The 2024 fourth-rounder Chase Allsup had a messy first inning, hitting a batter and allowing a double and a couple singles, and it took a rehabbing Chadwick Tromp throwing out a runner to get the second out. But he went for 3.2 innings, with five hits allowed and a walk. Andy Fabian (no relation to Jud!) threw a nice 2.1 innings, whiffing four. Luis Beltrán allowed a run in the seventh inning, walking two. Joe Glassey threw a scoreless eighth. And tall guy Jared Beck allowed a fifth run on a solo home run.
The Shorebirds scored one run off a sac fly by the rehabbing catcher Tromp, who also hit a double. Nate George – so hot right now – tripled in four chances to keep his season OPS an impressive .897. Jesús Liranzo and Frederick Bencosme had a single apiece.
