Adley couldn’t help propel the Tides to a victory, as Chesapeake was the only winner in the Orioles’ system Tuesday.

Triple-A; Lehigh Valley IronPigs (Phillies) 3, Norfolk Tides 2

Adley Rutschman hit a loud double and Jeremiah Jackson hit his 11th homer of the year, but it wasn’t enough to boost the offense for the Tides against the IronPigs.

Jackson gave Norfolk an early lead in the top of the 1st, pouncing on a sinker let over the plate and blasting it the other way for a solo shot. His 11th long ball of the season puts him in a three-way tie with Dylan Beavers and Vimael Machín for third among the Tides. The 25-year-old continues to dominate Triple-A, putting up .381 average and 1.096 OPS since being promoted at the beginning of June.

Rutschman provided the highlight that resonated most throughout Birdland in the 6th, squaring up a fastball at the top of the zone and sending a lead-off double crashing off the base of the right-center wall. It was Rutschman’s only hit of the game, but he also reached via a walk in the 3rd.

Norfolk got a strong start from right-hander Thaddeus Ward, who pitched 5.1 innings, allowing 1 ER, while giving up 3 H, 6 BB and punching out six. After Ward gave up the 1-0 lead on an RBI single in the bottom of the 6th, Norfolk reclaimed the lead on a Silas Ardoin solo homer. However, the Norfolk bullpen gave up a game-tying homer in the bottom of the 8th and a walk-off long ball in the 9th to give Lehigh Valley the win.

Box Score

Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 2, Altoona Curve (Pirates) 1

Levi Wells, Carter Rustad and Trace Bright combined to two-hit the Curve as the Baysox won a low-scoring affair against Altoona.

Wells got the start for Chesapeake and set down the first six batters he faced. The only hit Wells allowed came in the bottom of the 3rd, when Jase Bowen laced a leadoff double to left and scored on a throwing error. Wells would then set down the remaining four batters he faced, exiting in the bottom of 4th with a line of 3.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R (0 ER), 0 BB and 5 K.

Rustad got the last two outs of the 4th before turning things over to Bright in the 5th. The former fifth-round pick from the 2022 draft set down nine of the first ten batters he faced, including five punchouts. The only hit Bright surrendered came on a one-out single in the bottom of the 9th, but Bright picked up his seventh and 8th Ks to end the game. The eight strikeouts were a season high for Bright, and tied his career high with the Baysox.

Chesapeake’s only runs of the game came via a Carter Young two-run homer in the top of the 2nd. It was Young’s second home run in the last five games as he continues to work his way back from an early-season injury.

Box Score

High-A: Winston-Salem Dash (White Sox) 5, Aberdeen IronBirds 1

Aberdeen starter Cohen Achen gave up five runs over the first three innings and the IronBirds offense couldn’t dig itself out of that hole in the loss to the Dash.

In the top of the 1st, Achen gave up a lead-off single, followed by a walk and a passed ball to give Winston-Salem two runners in scoring position. The Dash then put three runs on the board thanks to a pair of RBI singles and a failed pickoff attempt at first that allowed a runner to score from third.

Achen then gave up a leadoff triple to start the 2nd, followed by a single that saw the Dash expand their lead to 4-0. The IronBirds would get a run on the board in the bottom of 2nd, but Achen gave that run back in the 3rd. He loaded the bases on a pair of singles and a walk, before giving up a sac fly as Winston-Salem restored their four-run advantage.

Four Aberdeen relievers combined to shut out the Dash over the final six innings of the game, but the IronBird bats couldn’t reward their bullpen’s efforts. Their only run-scoring hit came via an Anderson De Los Santos single that scored Thomas Sosa from second in the 2nd. Aberdeen would get a runner in scoring position in the 5th, 6th and 8th, but never advanced them as the IronBirds finished 1-for-8 with RISP.

Box Score

Lynchburg Hillcats (Guardians) 8, Delmarva Shorebirds 5

The Shorebirds raced out to a 5-0 lead, allowed five runs in the 4th and couldn’t find any offense late as the Hillcats secured a come-from-behind win in the series opener.

Andrés Nolaya got the scoring going for the Shorebirds in the 2nd, lacing a one-out triple down the right-field line to score Colin Tuft from first. After Nolaya was picked off at third, Elis Cuevas singled, stole second and scored on a Nate George single.

That 2-0 lead would balloon even further in the 3rd thanks to Tuft and Noyala. After a HBP and walk put two runners on, Tuft doubled to right field to score the Shorebirds third run of the game. Noyala tried to lay down a squeeze play, but got two runs for the price of one when Tuft scored from second on a throwing error.

That 5-0 lead quickly disappeared in the 4th, as starter Sayer Diederich lost control of the game. Diedrich started the inning by loading the bases on a pair of singles and a walk. Lynchburg pushed across their first run on a sac fly, and then got a single and double in back-to-back at bats to make it 5-4. After Garrett Howe stole third, Diedrich uncorked a wild pitch that allowed Howe to scamper home and tie the game.

Perhaps demoralized by Lynchburg’s comeback, the Delmarva offense couldn’t muster a response. They’d pick up a handful of singles throughout the second half of the game, but never had multiple hits in an inning and finished the game 2-for-11 with RISP.

The Hillcats would score two runs in the 7th and another run in the 9th thanks to a ton of singles, stolen bases and sac flies. Despite registering nine hits, Lynchburg only had one extra-base hit, but finished with five stolen bases and three sac flies.
