Orioles minor league recap 7/25: Beavers hits two homers in Bowie win

Down on the farm Povich was back to starting in Norfolk and the Delmarva offense exploded for 17 runs

Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 6, Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp (Marlins) 5 – Game 1/F7

This was Cade Povich’s first start for Norfolk after his All-Star break demotion. It went OK as the lefty needed just 87 pitches to get through six innings, but he did allow five runs (four earned) on six hits, a walk, and two strikeouts. Luis González was perfect in his lone inning, striking out two to earn the win.

Norfolk made the most of its chances on offense, going 2-for-4 with runners in scoring position and leaving just one runner on base. All of their runs came on home runs. Kyle Stowers hit a three-run homer in the sixth, and Nick Maton walked off with a three-run bomb of his own in the bottom of the seventh. Jackson Holliday and Coby Mayo combined to go 0-for-6 with four strikeouts.

Triple-A: Jacksonville Jumbo Shrimp 1, Norfolk Tides 0 – Game 2/F7

The Tides lineup did nothing in Game 2 of the day. They compiled just two hits and one walk, but never even got a runner into scoring position. Mayo and Terrin Vavra had one single each. Maton worked their lone walk. Holliday was 0-for-3 with a strikeout.

Tucker Davidson was the hard-luck loser on the mound after delivering six standout innings. The 28-year-old southpaw allowed one run on five hits, two walks, and six strikeouts. His season ERA is down to 2.80. Davidson’s MLB track record is not great, but the Orioles could turn to him at some point down the stretch as they look for quality arms to eat up innings. Colin Selby tossed one shutout inning in relief.

Double-A: Bowie Baysox 4, Akron RubberDucks (Guardians) 2

Just about every arm that took that mound for Bowie turned in a nice day of work. Seth Johnson worked four solid innings to start, allowing just one run on three hits and two strikeouts. Houston Roth followed with two shutout innings and three strikeouts to nab the win. Levi Stoudt also punched out three in his two perfect frames. And Keagan Gillies came on to record his fifth save, but not before coughing up one run in the ninth inning.

Dylan Beavers led the offense. The right fielder smacked two home runs: a two-run shot in the third and a solo bomb in the fifth. Beavers also walked twice and stole a pair of bases. Jud Fabian and Frederick Bencosme both doubled. Matthew Etzel hit his third Double-A triple of the season.

High-A: Jersey Shore BlueClaws (Phillies) 8, Aberdeen IronBirds 2

Aberdeen used four pitchers here, and only one of them had a game they were probably happy about. Preston Johnson tossed three shutout innings in the middle of game, striking out two in the process. Trey Gibson scuffled out of the gate, allowing four runs (three earned) and walking five over three innings. Deivy Cruz and Cooper Chandler combined to allow four runs (two earned) over the final two innings of the day.

The news wasn’t much better on offense for Aberdeen. They had six hits and a walk, but went 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position. Doubles from Tavian Josenberger and Reed Trimble were their only extra-base hits. Mac Horvath went 0-for-4 with two strikeouts. Luis Valdez walked, stole a base, and a scored a run.

Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 17, Fredericksburg Nationals 5

There was oodles of offense for the Shorebirds. They had 18 hits as a group, walked five times, and went 8-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Leandro Arias, Aron Estrada, and Anderson De Los Santos all had three-hit games. Arias and De Los Santos both drove in five runs apiece and hit a home run. Arias’ bomb was a grand slam in the ninth inning. Jake Cunningham also went deep, a solo shot in the second inning.

Five different pitchers were used by the Shorebirds, none of them recording more than seven outs. Ty Weatherly and Harif Frias were the standouts. Weatherly started and tossed two shutout frames while striking out three. Frias completed 2.1 clean innings of relief, also punching out three.
