Orioles minor league recap 7/3: Trey Gibson tosses seven shutout innings

Standout performances were few and far between on a rough night down on the farm, but Gibson was terrific.

Triple-A: Norfolk Tides vs. Durham Bulls (Rays) – PPD/Inclement Weather

Some rain around Norfolk washed away this game between the Tides and Bulls. It will be made up as part of a double-header in Durham at some point in the future. The date of that has not been announced yet.

Double-A: Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants) 6, Chesapeake Baysox 4 – Game 1

This was the completion of a game that began on July 1 and was stopped in the middle of the third inning. The Baysox were leading 1-0 at the time of the stoppage, but were outscored 6-3 in the innings played on Wednesday.

Nestor German tossed two scoreless innings as the starter. Raúl Alcantara took the ball on the re-start, but did not fare as well. Over 2.1 innings he coughed up three runs (two earned) on four hits, one walk, and one strikeout. Yaqui Rivera was next out of the ‘pen. He gave up a pair of runs on two hits, one walk, and two strikeouts. Kyle Virbitsky did well over the final two innings. He struck out three and the only run he allowed was unearned.

Chesapeake had plenty of runners on base. They collected 10 hits and three walks, but they failed to cash in often enough, going 2-for-11 with runners in scoring position. Reed Trimble led the offense with three hits, two runs scored, a double, and a solo homer. Creed Willems had two hits, two RBI, and a double. Alfredo Velásquez had a pair of hits, two walks, and a run scored. Max Wagner doubled and walked.

Double-A: Chesapeake Baysox 3, Richmond Flying Squirrels (Giants) 0 – Game 2 – F/7

The performance of the day belongs to Baysox starter Trey Gibson. He threw all seven innings of this shortened game and allowed just two baserunners: a fielding error and a single. Outside of that, he was perfect, striking out six to earn the win. His season ERA has dropped to 2.05 over 26.1 innings at Double-A.

On offense, the Baysox had one good inning. They scored all three of their runs in the fourth. That inning saw them string together a walk, two singles, and a hit by pitch to score the first run. Later, Carter Young drove in the other two with a single into left field.

Enrique Bradfield Jr., Adam Retzbach, and Young had two hits each. Retzbach’s double was Chesapeake’s only extra-base hit. Bradfield worked the team’s lone walk, but he was also 0-for-1 on stolen base attempts.

High-A: Greensboro Grasshoppers (Pirates) 7, Aberdeen IronBirds 3

Aberdeen out-hit Greensboro 9-to-7, but had just six at-bats with runners in scoring position and went 2-for-6 in such instances. Aron Estrada was the only IronBird with multiple hits. He also scored twice. Anderson De Los Santos, Ethan Anderson, and Austin Overn had one double each. Griff O’Ferrall went 1-for-4 with a walk and a run scored.

The entire game was soured by a rough outing for Sebastian Gongora. The starter lasted just one inning and gave up five runs, including a three-run homer. After that, the pitching was rather good for Aberdeen. Wyatt Cheney tossed two scoreless frames. Carter Baumler allowed a pair of runs in his 1.1 innings. Christian Herberholz worked 2.2 clean frames. And Alejandro Méndez wrapped up the game with a perfect eighth inning.

Low-A: Frederickburg Nationals 1, Delmarva Shorebirds 0

It was a pitching masterclass on both sides of this affair. Delmarva allowed only four hits while Frederickburg served up just three. Evan Yates was on the bump for Delmarva. He worked six innings, allowed one run on two hits, a walk, and eight strikeouts. Joe Glassey followed with two shutout innings, and Jared Beck tossed a clean ninth.

Fernando Peguero had two of Delmarva’s three hits, both were singles. Maikol Hernández had the other single. And that was it. Delmarva had zero walks. The other two base runners they had came on errors by Fredericksburg. It’s not as if they were totally over matched though. They struck out just three times but grounded out a whole bunch.
