It was a night of many strikeouts for Norfolk, Bowie, and Aberdeen. That’ll help you win.
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 6, Worcester Red Sox 3
Brandon Young started for the Tides and struck out 10 batters in 4.2 innings. He allowed two runs on just three hits. The leadoff batter in the game, Roman Anthony, homered. After that hit, Young retired nine of the next 10 batters to get into the fourth inning. In the fourth he walked a batter followed by an RBI double.
The Tides blew a 3-2 lead in the top of the eighth but came back in the bottom of the inning to score three runs and get the win. Jean Segura and Liván Soto knocked in the eighth-inning runs. Once and future Oriole Bryan Baker earned the save with perfect ninth.
Jud Fabian had three hits from the top of the order including an RBI double and a run scored. Coby Mayo singled twice, knocked in one run, and scored one run.
Double-A: Bowie Baysox 2, Erie SeaWolves (DET) 1
The Baysox pitching staff was on fire last night, holding the SeaWolves to just three hits. Starter Alex Pham pitched 5.1 shutout innings with just one hit and two walks. He struck out seven. Pham has had a very good August with just three earned runs allowed in 27.1 total innings. That’s a 0.99 ERA over five starts.
The offense scored single runs in the second and seventh innings. In the second, Frederick Bencosme singled, stole second base, and scored on a hit by Collin Burns. In the seventh, Anthony Servideo singled, stole second base, and scored on a hit by Enrique Bradfield, Jr. Weird.
The team had just five hits in the game. The only hit that came outside of the second and seventh innings was a first-inning double from Samuel Basallo. He also walked. Dylan Beaver went 0-for-3 with a walk.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 2, Winston-Salem Dash (CWS) 1 – F/10
Trey Gibson pitched four innings for the IronBirds with eight strikeouts and zero walks. That is good! He struck out five of the first six batters he faced. In the third inning he gave up two singles, his only hits, then threw two wild pitches. The second allowed a run to score.
Creed Willems walked and came around to score the first run on a single by Aneudis Mordán. After that single, the team didn’t score again until the bottom of the ninth when Aron Estrada got the walk-off sacrifice fly.
Three of the team’s seven hits were by #9 hitter Jalen Vasquez.
Low-A: Down East Wood Ducks (TEX) 3, Delmarva Shorebirds 2
Shorebirds’ starter Keeler Morfe allowed two runs (one earned) on four hits in four innings. The earned run came in the first inning when he gave up two singles and then two sacrifice flies. The unearned run scored in the fourth after Morfe loaded the bases on a single, a HBP, and a walk. Infielder Braylin Tavera somehow made an error on the infield fly rule to allow the second run to come in.
It was the 18-year-old’s third start with Delmarva since being promoted out of the Dominical Summer League.
Four of the Shorebirds’ seven hits came off the bat of leadoff hitter Austin Overn. This year’s third-round draft pitch fell a home run short of the cycle, stole two bases, and scored both of Delmarva’s runs. He was knocked in by Ryan Stafford, the fifth-round pick with a single in the first inning and a sac fly in the seventh.
