There were two wins, one loss, and a whole lotta rain
Triple-A: Charlotte Knights (CWS) 12, Norfolk Tides 1
It was a rough night for Tides’ pitching. Starter Justin Armbruester was knocked out in the second inning with six runs allowed. He had thrown 52 pitches when he was pulled and gave up two walks and five hits, including a home run. Old friend Nick Vespi also gave up six runs in one inning, aided by three walks.
The Tides scored their only run in the top of the first on back-to-back hits from Daniel Johnson and Niko Goodrum. They had seven hits in the game including three from number nine hitter Fernando Peguero. Peguero was playing in just his third game with the Tides after playing 56 games in the Florida Coast League. Not sure what is going on there.
Heston Kjerstad has not played since his demotion on August 1st.
Double-A: Somerset Patriots (NYY) 1, Bowie Baysox 0 – Suspended
This game was suspended due to rain in the top of the third inning just after Trace Bright allowed a home run to Somerset’s Anthony Seigler. It will be resumed tomorrow at 3:05 before the team’s regularly scheduled game. It’s Gunnar Henderson bobblehead night so get on down to Bowie for the almost doubleheader.
High-A: Aberdeen IronBirds 4, Brooklyn Cyclones (NYM) 3
Friday’s game in Aberdeen was suspended in the fourth inning due to rain and completed in seven innings today before being called for rain in the eighth. The regularly scheduled game was postponed. The IronBirds and Cyclones will play a doubleheader today to make it up.
Before the game was suspended on Friday, the IronBirds went up 1-0 when Jalen Vasquez singled in Reed Trimble. Trimble had walked and stolen second base ahead of Vasquez. Also on Friday, Enrique Bradfield stole two bases after a walk. They were his 54th and 55th of the season.
Pitcher Luis De León pitched final 3.2 innings of the game that were played last night. He got the win despite allowing three runs in the seventh inning and walking five batters.
The IronBirds added three runs late in the game. In the sixth, Douglas Hodo III and Tavian Josenberger singled ahead of Trimble, who knocked them both in with a double. The team manufactured a run in the seventh when Jalen Vasquez singled, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball, and came in on a sac fly.
Low-A: Delmarva Shorebirds 7, Myrtle Beach Pelicans (CHC) 6
The Shorebirds won a wild one last that didn’t end until a bit after midnight thanks to a lengthy rain delay after the first inning. Fans who stuck around were rewarded with a four-run rally in the eighth and walk-off win in the ninth.
Blake Money started the game and gave up two unearned runs in the first. He gave up two hits but both runs scored as a result of errors made by outfielder Thomas Sosa. Money did not return after the rain delay and the game essentially became a bullpen game.
Down 4-2 in the bottom of the eighth, the Shorebirds loaded the bases on two walks and an error. A third walk forced in a run and Jake Cunningham got the big hit: a bases-clearing double. The Birds went from down two runs to up two runs in a hurry.
Pitcher Harif Frias coughed up a two-run homer in the top of the ninth, forcing the need for walk-off heroics. Aron Estrada obliged, hitting a fly ball with Aneudis Mordán on third base. Mordán scored and the long game came to an end.
Shoutout to shortstop Leandro Arias for his three-hit game. He was the only Shorebird with multiple hits.
