It was two 2-1 victories down on the farm
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 2, Durham Bulls (TBR) 1 – F/11
The Tides pitching staff didn’t allow a hit until there were two hits in the seventh inning and held the Bulls to just two hits over eleven innings. Starter Carlos Tavera pitched five hitless innings with two walks and seven strikeouts.
Colin Selby followed with a 1-2-3 sixth inning and Justin Armbruester retired the first two batters he faced before allowing the first Bulls hit, a solo home run that tied the game. Armbruester ultimately pitched four innings with two hits allowed. After the Tides took the lead in the top of the 11th, Nick Vespi pitched a perfect bottom-of-the-inning for the save.
The Tides’ offense had an Orioles-like ineffectiveness, going just 1-for-12 with RISP and leaving 12 on base. They finally scored a run in the sixth inning on a double steal, of all things. With runners on the corners, Forrest Wall stole second and Samuel Basallo stole home when the catch was bobbled at second base.
Wall knocked in the go-ahead run in the 11th inning, a single that scored the Manfred Man. He had a two-hit game and first baseman Daniel had three hits. Basallo was 0-for-4 with a walk. Jud Fabian had four strikeouts.
Double-A: Bowie Baysox 2, Erie SeaWolves (DET) 1
There was a long stretch of this game with no offensive action. The SeaWolves got on the board in the bottom of the first inning, then no more runs were scored until the eighth. The Baysox scored a solo run in each of the top of the eighth and ninth innings to get the win.
Starter Trace Bright struggled through 3.2 innings with four walks and three hits. He needed 81 pitches. Dan Hammer, Tyler Burch, and Jakob Hernandez pitched the final 4.1 innings with two hits. They did not allow another walk.
The Baysox were 0-for-5 with RISP going into the eighth inning when they finally managed to score. They did it without getting a hit with a runner in scoring position, though. They small-balled their way to tying the game. Pinch runner Dylan Beavers, coming in for Adam Retzbach, moved to second on a sac bunt and then stole third base. Enrique Bradfield, Jr. grounded out softly and Beavers scored.
Douglas Hodo started the ninth inning with a double and came around to score on a sac bunt that turned into an error. It was a two-hit night for Hodo, the only batter with a multi-hit game.
Heston Kjerstad continued his rehab and went hitless with two walks.
