There was excellent starting pitching in Bowie and a bloodbath for the Shorebirds
Triple-A: Norfolk Tides 8, Charlotte Knights (CWS) 4
The Tides jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning thanks to doubles from TT Bowens and Forrest Wall, a Jud Fabian walk, a single from Niko Goodrum, and an error from the Knights shortstop. Starting pitcher Brandon Young gave the entire lead back in the following two innings. It wasn’t a great night for Young, who gave up 10 hits and two walks in five innings.
Norfolk re-took the lead in the fifth on Samuel Basallo’s 2nd triple-A home run. It was Basallo’s only hit in the game though he also walked. Fabian was hitless. Niko Goodrum had two hits including a clutch single in the eighth to add on some insurance runs.
If you missed the news, Terrin Vavra is back in the organization. He celebrated his return with two singles and three strikeouts.
Double-A: Bowie Baysox 3, Harrisburg Senators (WAS) 1
The star of this game was starting pitcher Cameron Weston. The 2022 eighth-round pick went six innings for the first time in his professional career and he did so with style. He gave up just two hits and one walk without allowing a run. He struck out nine, all swinging.
Leadoff batter Frederick Bencosme did his job of setting the table. He walked in the third inning and came around to score on back-to-back singles from Douglas Hodo and Carter Young. In the fifth, he singled and scored on a double from Hodo.
Hodo had a fine offensive day with a single and two doubles. John Rhodes also had a multi-hit game with an RBI.
High-A: Jersey Shore BlueClaws (PHI) 4, Aberdeen IronBirds 0
The BlueClaws scored all four of their runs in the top of the first inning off of starting pitcher Levi Wells. However, only two of those runs were earned, thanks to two errors in the inning. The IronBirds committed four errors in the game, all from the recently promoted 2024 draft picks. Griff O’Ferrall (2), Austin Overn, and Ryan Stafford all had miscues.
The offense had six hits in the game, three from Aron Estrada. Heston Kjerstad made his first rehab start tonight as DH and went 0-for-3.
Low-A: Carolina Mudcats (MIL) 18, Delmarva Shorebirds 4
Woof. The less said about this game, the better. the Mudcats put together two six-run innings and started right away. Shorebird starter Keeler Morfe had a disastrous game. He faced six batters and walked four of them. He also hit a batter and struck out one. He left the game with two runs in and the bases loaded. Morfe threw 31 pitches, just 10 of which were strikes.
His relief, Trent Turzinski, allowed all three inherited runners to score, plus one of his own. The Shorebirds used six pitchers, all of whom allowed a run. That includes Juan Rojas, who struck out an impressive seven batters in 3.1 innings. But he gave up five runs thanks in part to issuing three walks.
The offense racked up 10 hits, including multi-hit games from Edwin Amparo and Fernando Peguero. Miguel Rodríguez hit his first home run for the Shorebirds after having three in the Dominican Summer League.
