The Baltimore Orioles celebrated the Fourth of July with a 3-2 win over the Atlanta Braves (39-48). On paper this series has two similar teams going against one another. Each team entered the 2025 season with high expectations but has fallen short of those expectations; each team is also just about the same distance from securing a Wild Card spot in their division.
The starters, Charlie Morton (5-7) for Baltimore and Spencer Strider (3-7), matched up quite evenly. Morton allowed 2 runs on 6 hits, including a homerun, walked 1, struck out 7 and hit 2 batters over 5.1 innings in earning the win while Strider allowed 3 runs on 7 hits, including 2 homeruns, walked 1 and struck out 6 over 6.0 innings to take the loss.
Both team’s bullpens covered for the starters by keeping their opponents from scoring over the final 3.2 and 3.0 innings, respectively.
Baltimore rode homeruns from Jordan Westburg (solo) in the third inning and from Cedric Mullins (2-run) in the fifth inning to the victory. Atlanta catcher Drake Baldwin hit a two-run homerun in the sixth, a homerun that preceded Morton’s exit following an Ozzie Albies hit by pitch.
Westburg went 3 for 4 and Gunnar Henderson went 2 for 4 with a double on the night.
In his return from the IL, Tyler O’Neill recorded a hit and scored a run.
Despite the victory, Baltimore remains 7.5 games back in the AL Wild Card race with another day taken off the calendar. The team is stuck in neutral as far as the standings go.
