Orioles overmatched by Snell, lose 10-0 to Giants as Kimbrel allows 6 runs in 9th

September 18, 2024 by Baltimore Baseball

BALTIMORE—After executive vice president/general manager Mike Elias predicted the Orioles would start playing more inspired baseball, they ran into San Francisco Giants left-hander Blake Snell.

Snell, whom the Orioles faced often when he was with the Tampa Bay Rays, allowed just one hit and struck out 12 in six innings as Baltimore’s offense continued to be non-existent in their 10-0 loss to the Giants before 23,967 at Camden Yards on Tuesday night.

The Orioles (84-67) have lost eight of their last 11, and their only hit against Snell (4-3) was Emmanuel Rivera’s second inning single. He walked Cedric Mullins in the fifth and Liván Soto in the sixth.

Sean Hjelle, Erik Miller, Tyler Rogers and Tristan Beck combined to allow four hits in three scoreless innings, a seventh-inning single by Heston Kjerstad, an eighth-inning double by Colton Cowser a single by Kjerstad and a double by Ryan O’Hearn in the ninth.

The Orioles have scored just 21 runs in their last 11 games. They were shut out for the eighth time this season. The 10-run loss was their worst shutout loss of the season.

Mike Yastrzemski led off the game with his 16th home run against Albert Suárez (8-6), who gave up four runs on six hits in 3 1/3 innings.

San Francisco (73-78), which broke a four-game losing streak in which they’d been shut out three times, scored two runs in the second on a sacrifice fly by Brett Wisely and a run-scoring single by Yastrzemski. Donovan Walton’s fourth-inning single made it 4-0.

Keegan Akin and Burch Smith combined for 3 1/3 hitless innings in relief of Suárez. Craig Kimbrel gave up a career-high six runs while recording only two outs in the ninth.
