Orioles Pitcher May Need Only One Rehab Outing Before Return

June 14, 2024 by Last Word On Baseball

Dean Kremer threw a bullpen session Thursday without issues. He could begin a minor league rehab assignment this weekend, Sam Cohn of The Baltimore Sun reports. Orioles manager Brandon Hyde said a decision hasn’t been made regarding which affiliate Kremer will join or when he might pitch. However, the right-hander is coming along well in his recovery from a triceps strain in any case. After being placed on the 15-day injured list on May 24, Kremer may only need one rehab outing before he rejoins the rotation.

Dean Kremer (triceps strain) threw a bullpen this morning that “went well,” Hyde said. No decision yet on when and where his rehab outing will be.

Dean Kremer is Ready for Rehab Assignment

Kremer’s move to the IL came one day after John Means went on the 15-day IL with a left forearm strain. Starter Tyler Wells has been on the IL since April with right elbow inflammation.

“You’ve got to be able to make adjustments and deal with some adversity,” Hyde said before a game against the Chicago White Sox. “Pitching hiccups are going to happen, and injuries are going to happen.

“That’s why you hopefully create as much depth as you possibly can on your 40-man roster or in Triple-A. I’m sure we’re going to have to continue to tap into it. More things are going to happen.”

Kremer did inform the team of some soreness in his triceps after the fourth inning during his start against the St. Louis Cardinals on May 20. The right-hander, who entered that start with a 3.72 ERA through eight starts, allowed five runs and six hits against St. Louis.

The Orioles Rotation Without Kremer

Baltimore’s rotation includes Corbin Burnes, Kyle Bradish and Grayson Rodriguez. The latter two were also on the IL earlier this year, but both were reinstated in late May. Cole Irvin and Albert Suárez have made a return to starting roles. Bradish was diagnosed with a sprained UCL in February. Since his return, he’s pitching well through a few starts. Suarez has a 1.61 ERA this year but it’s his first MLB season since 2017. Irvin has a 2.87 ERA but with a low strikeout rate of 17.2 percent.

With a sparkling 3.01 ERA, the Orioles rotation is doing fine without Kremer. They’re breezing through the tough June schedule.
